Man Machine Poem (the album)
#61

The Heron Outside Wrote:I'm listening to the album now. I've never been more excited/tense to hear a new Hip rec. All I can say right now is how lush a record it is.

Will report back with more thoughts tonight.

In case some people don't want to read your review before the album comes out I didn't want to allude to the last sentence you wrote describing the vibe, but man that said everything. Without having heard the album that was a pretty damn poignant way to describe it (especially given the circumstances of the release now). I can't wait to listen to this.

First things first, I can't believe that this is the same group of musicians that wrote songs like Courage or NOIS. After spinning this a few times, it obviously has a serious emotional resonance but these are the types of songs that would strike an emotional chord regardless. There isn't anything in the way of "Bangers" on the record. A song like At Transformation, which is only off their last record, sounds like some sort of heavy metal, sonic implosion compared to the overall vibe of MMP.

In short, these are small songs that make a big, big impact. I woke up humming the whole record, somehow.

For that very reason, this is one of the more cohesive Hip records, sonically speaking, in recent memory. There is a very clear purpose with this record and I have to think whatever goals they set out were achieved.

As mentioned on World Possessed, Kevin Drew's fingerprints are all over this record. So many of the songs grow into spacious, sprawling numbers a la BSS.

Vibe? Dusk on a Sunday.

I can already hear the complaints from the hard-rock fans, haha. Thanks for the review! Sounds like those first two singles are a pretty good indication of the overall vibe of the album, which personally I'm VERY excited about. Can't wait to hear the whole thing!

Wow, from what Heron Outside wrote, the album sounds great. Kevin Drew has the magic touch, I'm tellin' ya. Everything happens for a reason. Lush and resonant. Even though it wasn't meant to be, seems like it'll make an amazing last album.

Was this album recorded before or after Gords cancer was discovered?

Now especially after Heron Outside's thoughts, I'm beyond excited for this record. I went for a long stroll last night and listened to Battle Of The Nudes and a bunch of random Hip songs, including "In A World Possessed..." about 10 times in a row. Really dig the production and mix of both the new songs as well. Tired As F*ck took a few listens to get its claws in me, but now I can't get it out of my head.

For those of you in Winnipeg, Mcnally Robinson usually puts out their albums a few days early. In fact, I've seen CDs there a week before their release date. I'll be heading there everyday starting next Friday!

Tired is the worst song on the record, in my opinion.

I do believe that it was written before, but its so strange/eery how In a World Possessed by the Human Mind seems on the surface to echo someone getting a diagnosis of some sort, with a partner by their side - and then entering a part of the world where all discussions are about the mind. Cant help but think of Gord when I hear it. That and its such a tight song - drums lead in and the guitar parts ever so slightly building up.
