i'm agreeing with the possibility of the record being called "dougie stardust" but because of db's passing, they respectfully changed the name....last ditch effort becomes MMP.
my theory is the mulleted nirvana baby is dougie himself. :wink:

Well, 'Man Machine Poem' is a really potent song and, as a phrase, is pretty striking. I also rather like the idea of naming an album for a song on a previous album; it's perverse - the 'title track' is actually on an earlier album! - yet the self-referential aspect creates a fun sort of internal loop or dialogue across albums.
That said, 'Dougie Stardust' is a much wittier title. Since I don't take it as at all disrespectful of Bowie, I'd have kept it. On the other hand, I originally theorized that the 'DS' thing was a calculated act of marketing to raise interest; and the fact that a Hip album drops shortly thereafter tends to reaffirm that suspicion.

If I recall correctly, Man Machine Poem was initially done during the World Container sessions but obviously didn't surface until NFPA. It's interesting it's been a title that's been around almost ten years.
I used to hate the recurring lyrics/themes and thought it was lazy but now I don't mind it. The Hold Steady have some reoccurring phrases and lines in their catalogue too.

If they wanted to name it after an old song they should have used "New Orleans is Sinking." Might have tricked people into buying it.

The first single sounds great. A few thoughts on the album...
1. The Hip always change their sound from album to album. Based on the first single, it feels like this is the first time EVER that they really didn't change much from their previous album. It's not a bad thing, I just find that really interesting.
2. Speaking of their previous album, Now For Plan A, it's pretty interesting that they named the album after one of the songs from their last. It's also pretty cool that the first song is "Man", the last one is "Machine" and they whole thing I suppose is a "Poem".
3. Another tie in to their last album... The baby on the cover could be the result of "Plan A" which was to get it on with the girl instead of playing Twister.
4. Also, the baby looks like Gord Sinclair to me. A relative?

Since no one else seems to have mentioned it, it's worth noting that the 'baby' image is basically Nirvana's 'Nevermind' cover in reverse.
EDIT: my bad, Duran Duran alum jontaylor pointed this out in the 'Give me the News' thread. Whoops! :? Worth reiterating anyhow, I suppose; it certainly cannot be an accident, especially as the decision to edit out the arms was deliberate, and probably done to enhance that very effect
