With all the (probably warranted) griping about where the state of Gord's live 'shouting' voice is at, how bout a little positivity?
Soliciting nominees for Gord's best vocals either in studio or live (preferably via youtube, if live)
I've long, long held the belief that the song Fully Completely is some of Gord's best vocal work, especially the delivery of the line
I ponder the endlessness of the stars; and
Bring me back in shackles and hang me long out in the sun,
exonerate me, then forget about me,
oh wait and you'll see, just wait and you'll see... FULLY, COMPLETELY
can't explain technically why, it just is to me.
you?

Nothing beats the album version of Gift Shop. Amazing vocals from Gord, not to mention some of Rob Baker's finest guitar work. I've seen them play that song dozens of times in concert, and in my opinion they've never been able to duplicate the brilliant majesty of the studio version.

Hmmh. Quick answers to studio vocals might be "Fiddler's Green" or "Titanic Terrarium." I like the worldly tones on the former and the wry fragility of the latter.

Watching Gord and the boys sing "Pigeon Camera" at the Phoenix or even from the album always catches my eye.

I've always liked Gord's singing on "The Darkest One" and also "Stay".
For live singing, i've always love Gord in "Poets", especially how he says "Don't!" when starting the line "Don't tell me what the poets are doing".

My appreciation of Gord's work comes through the words he chooses and how he puts them in song. So sometimes his greatest moments are single lines taken from greater wholes. Put it all together and I believe he's one of the greatest poets/vocalists ever.
My favs:
At Transformation (studio version).
Leave. My God how can anyone write a better song about what a waste of time thinking about suicide is?
You're Everywhere. Great flow of words to melody
Live?
This performance of Locked blows me away. The way he portrays the nervous tension/panic of both killer and victim.

I don't know how many of you were able to download this from Scott's Dime torrent, The Tragically Hip - 2006-06-23. (viewtopic.php?f=3&t=17327)
The whole concert is excellent but the transition Gord goes through between Flamenco & Fire in the Hole (last 2 songs) blows me away frankly.
I could go on forever but if I had one thing to say to Gord I would tell him, "I accept the screaming but I didn't come here to see Daltry at the end of Won't Get Fooled Again. I came to see The Hip squeeze, mold and shape their music live, until it lays crumpled on the floor."
"Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time."

For the live shows I would have to say Blow at High Dough with the extended version that they did on the In Violet Light tour. Not just Gordie's voice but the band's pure kick ass display of rock and roll. Back when the shows were actually cared for and not a greatest hits tour. For the studio I would probably say probably say the The Dire Wolf. Love his voice going from low to high with the Fay's drums in the back and Baker's awesome guitar solo.

Seems like this thread has morphed into a best vocal and favourite lyric thread, so I'll give my fav's
For best vocal, there is something about Leave I have always liked, the lows Gord hits with his voice and then the peaks on the lines "It's a routine flight for this bird tonight........"
As for Lyrics, there's almost too many to pinpoint, but always loved the line in The Dark Canuck "And inside there's an army waiting
For their marching orders from you"

For delivery...Direwolf is right there at my top. The slow harmony of the opening "in that September off"...to the quickening pace towards the rim "we were never more 'here'...expanse getting broader"...as close to the perfect song as you can get.

When I sleep on the train, through straight lines, and shadows, you're there, or where the future lies, under the moon night, under the ballroom hangin', you're there, you're everywhere...
idk, not necessarily the "best", but perhaps one of the most poignant and emotionally riveting.

Nice to see "You're Everywhere" getting love on this thread. I said at the time that I thought this was one of their best recorded songs, and I still think that - and Gord's impassioned vocal is a key reason why.
