What a stretch by Mats....a Jagr-esque 18 points in his last 9 games. The time he's been needed the most, and he's stepped up his game big time. If only he had some decent talent around him..... :x

I lost a lot of respect for Nieuwendyk and Roberts for deciding to play in Florida for a few more bucks than they could have made in Toronto, but I think it was great of Nieuwendyk to say this about Mats:

''Mats is a great captain and a good friend,'' said the former Leaf. ''Sometimes he takes some abuse (in Toronto) but this guy cares as much as any captain I've ever played with, and he steps his game up when he has to.''

I imagine not having to deal with the rediculous media cirus and overblown expectations in toronto was a factor in roberts and nieuwendyk leaving.

Ouch! And the 'Nucks playoff hopes take another one in the nads, courtesy of the San Jose Sharks.

Since the Thornton for a bunch o crap trade:

Thornton: 55GP, 19G, 67A, 86PTS, +28 and the Sharks are in the playoffs.

Sturm: 49GP, 22G, 19A, 41PTS, +12
Primeau: 50GP, 6G, 8A, 14PTS, -10
Stuart: 53GP, 10G, 21A, 31PTS, -5
NET: 152GP, 38G, 48A, 86PTS, -3

That's right folks! Rather than have one player who can produce 86 points in 55 games, why not get three who can also produce 86 points.......in 152 games!

Seriously, is being a GM in this league really that complicated?!?

I see your point and still wonder what O' Connell was on when he made that trade.
However, having said that, in this day and age (new NHL) you have to include the salaries of the players involved. Sturm, Primeau, and Stuart together are making $1.1 million dollars less than what Thornton gets this year. You're also talking about obtaining more depth when you get 3 NHL caliber players for 1, albeit that 1 is probably at least 3x the player of any of the 3.
Finally, that 152 GP total is the net amount but it's misleading when you say that the 3 current Bruins produced 86 points in 152 games. You make it sound like they've played nearly two full seasons, when it's more like around 53 actual games.

But what does any of that matter when the Sharks can afford Thornton under the cap and two other players to fill the spots of the departed players (which, quite obviously, makes those three players more productive than the three players in Boston), and then watch Thornton lead them into the playoffs, guaranteeing the Sharks at least two home playoff dates and all of the gravy revenue that comes with it?

Depth? If the Bruins got more depth then something tells me they'd be doing a little better in the standings.

And how is saying that the 3 players the Bruins received have 86 points in 152 games misleading? That's exactly what they have. I don't "make it sound" like anything. If you can't interpret the numbers correctly, that's your prob.

Yup, misleading it isn't. Since anywhere up to three players can received a point on any given goal, it is fitting to describe their productivity in terms of man-games. Sturm, Primeau, Stuart = 86 pts in 152 man-games. Thornton = 86 pts in 55 man-games. It looks like Thornton just needed a change of scenery. Good luck to the Sharks in the playoffs.

It looks as though Thornton and the Sharks are going to sink the Nucks this year, I have a couple friends who'll be crying in their soup soon I think.

They have a talented team, but when will Vancouver wake up and get themselves a real no.1 goalie. Get rid of Bertuzzi this summer and get a goalie is my advice. Kinda sucks not having all the Canadian teams in the playoffs though, just shows how tough the West is right now. Anyone else think the NHL seriously needs to consider re-alignment and changing the scheduling? I think its stupid the way it is right now, no reason why T.O and Montreal cant play more games against teams like Detroit, Chicago and especially the Western Canadian teams.

When you look at Detroit's and Nashville's records you see how this unbalanced scheduling doesn't work from a pure fairness point of view. While Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Colorado and Minnesota have to beat up on each other 32 times a year, Detroit and Nashville play crap teams like StL, Chi, and Columbus 24 times. That's simply not right. Sure, have a few more games within the division, but there is no reason every team can't have a home and home with every other team in the NHL.

But it is funny to hear John Davidson bitch about it when I distinctly recall him saying in previous years that the league needed an unbalanced schedule to create more rivalries. It's a lame concept because - in my mind - rivalries are created in the playoffs. I mean I HATE Philly more than any team in the Leafs' division because they've knocked out the Leafs twice now. Bastards. Oh well, I don't have to worry about that happening this year. :x

Looks like everybody's favourite meathead Sean Avery is done with the Kings for the season. He is a free agent at the end of the year. Are there any teams crazy enough to pick this headcase up?

I was referring to why O'Connell may have made the move. Cutting costs right away was probably one of the reasons.

Getting 3 NHL-caliber players for 1 improves your depth, that's common sense.

The Bruins have played 152 games since the trade? Confusedcratch:

You say it isn't misleading yet you modify/correct it to 'man-games' from games. Hilarious.

Could somebody post a link or tell me what happened to Avery. I just heard a bit onthe radio saying he was released or something.
