I hope I'm not repeating old news, but this is the first I ever heard of it...in today's live chat on Canoe, "Scotty from Waterloo" said:
Paul, Bob Rock had something nice to say about each band member in his little 'retrospective' of the making of world container on the bands website ... except you. Do you owe him money or does he just not like the cut of your jib?
all Paul said in response was, "You'll notice I have never said anything nice about him either." This gave the chat kind of a weird feeling, kind of a buzzkill moment. so do you guys think it was a joke - a brushoff - or is there some known bad blood between Paul and Bob over the production of the album?
earlier in the interview, Rob said Bob was their first "real producer" because everybody else has let the band do their thing and he actually interfered - whoops, make that "got involved." I thought maybe Paul had a problem with that. After all, nobody seemed happy at all with Hugh Padgham mucking up In Violet Light...

Definitely joking -- he even stated at the end of the Canoe chat:
"I think Bob was a bigger help to us than we have had before in a producer."
That pretty much puts the water on that fire.

ok well i guess that's that. it just seemed like an odd thing for paul to say.
anyway i wasn't saying saying you, i, or we had a problem with hugh padgham. i remember reading some interviews where the band personally stated they didn't think he was a good producer for them in retrospect. doesn't anybody remember? i even remember one of the band saying padgham used to gripe about guitars dominating the music and said stuff like "not another guitar solo...i hate guitar solos." i liked the album too, but i got the impression the band wasn't happy with the finished product. you can see why i thought this might be part 2 of that.

I think Are You Ready and Use It Up are the closest the Hip have come to sounding like GBV.
I'm not saying they tried to, I just think those two tracks have always stood out as being reeeeeeeeeally non hipish...
all in all, im not a huge IVL fan, but I admit that IAGLIYDW is one of the best live Hip songs to hear.

If the band does have any gripes or reservations about Bob Rock, you and I ain't going to hear them until some time down the road.
They aren't giving interviews out of the goodness of their hearts. They're promoting an album, and you don't promote an album by saying, "I think the producer is a doofus." You say it's the bestest thing you've ever, ever heard.
That's one reason I'm not really interested in question-and-answer sessions. They're not likely to tell you what they really think (and there's no reason that they really should), so why bother?

Yeah. My guess is that if Paul was free to answer with complete honesty and without reservation, it would sound something like this:
"I didn't like that prick from the minute I first met him, but I must admit I didn't give him much of a chance. I was soured as soon as I saw how giddy Downie became after meeting him, flying to Hawaii every other weekend like a lovestruck schoolboy. He kept droning on and on and on about some "connection" they had made, and the next thing you know, Downie was spouting garbage like "playing from the heart instead of the head" and other foo-foo shiz like that. Between you and me - I think Bob might've....y'know....'done something'....to Gordie."
