i was listening the latest hip mix i'd made...and even though i've heard the song countless times, this morning Ahead By A Century really got to me..i teared up...lots of tears...it was a strange, beautiful moment...it's making the rest of my day great....

This song is full of emotion. The devotion towards the one the song is sung to is beautiful. Was reading this Gary Paulsen book the other day (about one of his iditarod trips) and he talks about the devotion one particular dog had toward him. Long story; the dogs get tangled, he has to unleash all of them, they take off, leaving him stranded in the alaskan wilderness 40 miles away from any shelter. This one particular dog, cookie, systematically rounds up the other dogs, fights some of them, and gets their asses back to him and the sled. I cried reading that the other night. Perhaps I was just over worked. But, back to the point, that passage made me think of that song, and how gord sings about his person who is so phenomenal, he cries that he / she is 'ahead by a century" bc of his / her devotion during the shitty time of adolescence.
Sorry to rant. Grading 150 summer reading essays!

Amazing how music can do that to you, sometimes when you least expect it.
Probably the last time I remember that happening to me was when I heard 38 Years Old on the radio... just because I hadn't heard the song in so long and it was so unexpected.

That happens to me quite often, but I notice it the most at Hip concerts. In particular it happened the strongest when I saw the Hip in Aspen in 98. Before the show I was mingling and talking to many of the concert goers. Most had never heard of the Hip, so I gave them a run down of who they were and what they meant to me. The Hip took the stage and within a few minutes of Grace Too, the band had the crowd in the palm of their hands. I was teary eyed for much of that concert because it was amazing for me to watch "my band" woo and win an unfamiliar crowd. This was the music at the moment talking. In Canada it's a different story. The band has a reputation, and even if you have never been to a Hip concert, or heard many of their songs, you are familiar with "The Hip".

The only time a song ever hit me like that was back when "If You're Gone" by Matchbox Twenty could be heard everywhere one went back in... dare I say 2000? I think I was like 17.
Anyway, I heard that song like a billion times and nothing, and then a very close friend of mine died (which I don't want to get into) and I heard the song shortly thereafter and bawled like I was six and fell of my bike or something...
To this day, when I hear that song I gotta leave the room.

I got the chills last summer at the Canada Day show in Toronto during Wheat Kings. It was my first Hip show so I didn't really know what songs to expect to hear and when they broke into that song it was incredible, and with all the lighters held above everyones head and being at night the atmosphere was tremendous. To this day when I listen to that song from the Livedownloads CD I still get goosebumps.
