My son's birthday is 2 Nov ... I think I'll buy it for him and keep it for him in trust until he turns 21.

It just seems like the right thing to do.

How thoughtful of you

Any guesses on the 2 new tracks? I say No Threat and Fighter Fighter. Also I was reading an old SI today, and I read that Ryan Dempster (Cubs pitcher, and apparantly stand-up comic) would invite TTH on SNL with him if he ever realizes his dream of hosting.

I count 24 videos on hipbase, not counting the two Gord Downie solo ones. Which isn't an official video? Twist my arm?

BTW: Woo hoo!

It's been a busy weekend so even though I got the Hip's email Friday, I haven't had time to comment. Stoked, 'chuffed', whatever you want to call it, November can't come soon enough.

The few negative and unimpressed comments were predictable, as was their origin so I'm not surprised that some are whining. Chris's previously quoted comment hit the nail on the head:

chris Wrote:I probably spend more time on downloading/uploading/editing fan recordings of The Hip than almost anyone. I tape, edit, author, distribute, etc, etc and have seen/heard more than my share of great shows... but I'll be first in line when this package hits the shelves!

And Shane, although this is a rare instance where a Greatest Hits/DVD/2 CD package actually looks like it was geared for the fans, the record company and the band still want to make money and sell copies. How many fans do you think would actually shell out their cash for a pre 1985 recording of The Hip? How many, for that matter, would even want a pre-1993 recording? Or pre 2000 recording? People want the highest quality for the lowest cost. It's called value, and there isn't much value in what you are asking for, to the average consumer.

We are the minority in the world of Hip fans. The members of this site, the diehards, the tapers and traders, etc. We are few and far between for a band that has sold more than 6 million records.

Even if every Hipbaser bought every record twice, that's not even 1% of their sales!

I can see your point, but it's unrealistic. This is a fantastic package and the band should be applauded for it.

:thumb:

I don't have time to do the research, but I suspect that this is one of the most monumental and ambitious rock & roll projects ever attempted. Any band can release DVDs, greatest hits collections, or whatever but it's clear that The Hip (and the Hipbase) had unprecedented input into the final product.

Any fan, casual or hardcore, should give thanks. Anyone who doesn't is merely an observer.

Rock on!

An observer?? Kind of harsh isn't it? I don't have a problem with people who aren't gushing over every aspect of this release. I'd like the videos and live concert but I might take a pass on the greatest hits. So are we judging fans again?

Dear the Tragically Hip,

Thank you.

I can think of no better gift then to have an official copy of that night in toronto, aside from hopefully finding myself in a crowd scene going apeshit.

Ill be lining up potter style november 1st 12:01 am.

TTL, you obviously see value in the DVDs. My comment was directed toward the "this is no big deal" set. Whether we buy the whole kit-n-kaboodle or just what interests us, at least we'll buy something and not cry because our favorite obscure unreleased track isn't front & center. I'd love GBA or BS to be released, but I'm not pissed that neither is referenced in regard to Hipeponymous.

That's all.

That's cool, man. I think it is a great thing too. I think The Hip should have done a DVD a few years ago but the past is the past. I look forward to seeing the DVD and who knows, I might even buy the whole package.

Hmmm... decisions, decisions...

Do you honestly think you can wait that long past the release date without exploding?! Especially since we will all be discussing it here in depth come Nov.1. For the love of god, don't do that to yourself!

You make a good point... that would be torturing myself to wait that long. But then I think about how happy I'd be to unwrap it for Christmas...

Honestly people, I'm going to flip back and forth on this probably right up until November 1. And unfortunately I don't have the birthday gift option, because my birthday is, uh, today.

Suggestions are welcome... although I suspect I know what most of you would say.

I'm so excited for this package. I'm almost more excited to see the video features than the concert itself (I was there). THings such as backstage moments or maybe some jams---things that we never get to see from the boys. Even if those aren't included, it will be amazing!

Might I suggest the 'Birthday IOU' a much appreciated item at times allowing people to;
a-get you something you really really want when it isn't released
b-time to save for it if it is exceptionally expensive

D
-my kids get many, many birthday and christmas IOUs, it is also a good bargaining tool ;-)

Still picking up the elderly from the floor, still dealing with the drunks, now wrestling seals and posting it on twitter.. @richardilderton
'Whoops' is not a word the patient wants to hear...apparently

Living in California, I've never actually seen a Hip video on a real television....only poor quality internet stuff. So, seeing all the videos and the "11 new video" things is greatly exciting to me.

Can't wait, even just to peruse the 48 page booklet.

Cheers!

First of all - Happy Birthday Smile

Second - just think of how happy you will be when you unwrap the plastic around the box set November 1 and can pop that DVD into your player.
Or... if Christmas is that important - put your tree up Oct.31, buy the set the next day, wrap it in Christmas wrapping paper THEN open it. But then people might think you were crazy or something.
Or just buckle in to peer pressure and buy it when it come out!
