Now that is my kind of stock! I will be loading up on this one in 2006.
Quote:Wendy's International Inc. plans to spin off 15 to 18 per cent of its popular Tim Hortons coffee and doughnut chain in an initial public offering, the company said Friday.
Wendy's hopes to complete the IPO by the end of the first quarter of 2006 and will hang on to the remaining stake in Tim Hortons.

The big T is the only part of the Wendy's empire turning a profit right now. Wendy's was tinkering last quarter with an idea to expand it's 250 or so US Tim Hortons locations by shutting down Wendy's franchises and converting them into Tim's.
Tim Hortons may be nearing saturation/plateau in Canada, but a slow and steady expansion through the US could mean serious profit, especially if they put the crunch on Krispy Kreme like they did here.
If you've got the cash, I think it'd be a smart buy... but it won't be easy to grab.

I agree that Tim Hortons is very close to saturation, that is why they have paused expansion in Western Canada. However, I know the revenue will be on the up and up for many years too come. It is going to be tuff to break into the US market with Star Bucks, KK and Caribou Coffee (Big in the Mid West and expanding, tips for you guys

).

I read in another article that Wendy's is actually planning on selling all of Tim Horton's within a few years. I believe the thinking is to cash in on this asset and use the proceeds to fight its main competitors McDonald's and Burger King in its core business.
Perhaps a bit of a risky move. How much market share can you take from Mickey D's and "the King", and how expensive is it going to be? Is it worth selling off a business which is providing most of your profits currently?
Still, as a Canadian it's kind of intriguing. How cool would it be to say, "Hey, I own stock in Timmy's!"

There are 20 Tim Horton's in St. Catharines - a city of 140 000. Doing the math, that's one store for every 7000 people. There's a fun game - find the city with the highest density of Tim Horton's.

Whitby, Ontario used to have the highest number of coffee/donut shops per capita for a while.... They included 8 Tim Hortons, 7 Coffee Times, 4 Country Styles, 2 Robin's Donuts, a Baker's Dozen, and a few other independant shops.
Roughly 26 shops for 80,000 at the time. One for every 3077 people. There was even one intersection with one on each corner at one point, all different brands and all competing.
I don't think it's quite like that anymore.
But I've heard that Halifax has the greatest number of Timmy's per capita.
