When it comes to summer popcorn flicks, it doesn't get much better than this. The "happy" ending was mildly annoying and there were a couple of silly plot developments, but overall I really enjoyed it. The first 90 minutes are absolutely riveting, and I liked the way Spielberg kept piling on the tension with every scene, creating a creepy atmosphere of doom and dread throughout the majority of the film. Those alien tripods are spooky as hell. I'm usually not a big CGI fan, as it can look a bit too cartoonish sometimes, but damn, the special effects in this flick were some of the best I've seen since Lord of the Rings, and the sound effects were incredible. Tom Cruise may be crazy as a freakin' loon these days, but the dude has always been a pretty solid actor in my book, and I think he does a great job in the movie. I kept waiting for a scene where he jumps up and down on a couch and declares his love for Katie Holmes, but they must have left it on the cutting room floor.
Overall it isn't Spielberg's best, but if you want some good rockin' summer entertainment, you could do much worse. I give it 3 thumbs out of 4!

Alot of the reviews out there are saying that this project was rushed as there was a tiny whole in cruise's and speilbergs schedule, and that this is apparent in some parts of the film. (too much CG, bad shots, not a noticeable dircetion from speilberg) All the reviews ive seen give it a so-so rating thus far, but if enough hipbasers recommend it..well then its good enough for me

I am the self proclaimed president of the "I hate Science Fiction" Club. But I forced myself to see this movie, and I can't deny how good it was.
The suspense was built up, thoughout the first 30-45 minutes of the film the special effects were amazing. It is the sound that makes this film believable.
This is the first Sci-Fi movie I have seen in the theatre since ET. I've given the Matrix, Star Trek... etc.. a chance, I can't get into this genre, however..
The War of Worlds in my opinion will entertain even the most pessimistic movie goer. It was done well.

This was a great movie, the buildup to the attack was brilliant and the rest of the movie was a great disaster flick. It doesn't let up at all, so you'll leave the theatre as a big ball of nerves.

I thought it was pretty good. The sound was top notch. The ending, I know it stays true to the book, buty it doesn't get built up at all and it just happens all at once, I thought they could improve on that as well. The total happy ending is pretty cheesy to. But overall not bad.
I got free passes to another movie after my wife and I complained that the people in front of us brought in a new born that cried the whole movie and there friends brought in a 4 year old, that did the same. This is not a kids movie, I can't believe people could be that stupid. The baby probably lost half of its hearing during the movie.

I thought this movie was fecal matter. The rogue longshoreman father who can't get in touch with his rich suburban kids who have been mentally hijacked by their milquetoast step-father stereotype pissed me off right from the get-go. Minor details also set me off....if Aliens can ride lightning(btw, some Metallica at that point would have kicked ass), how come they can't drink water. And am I expected to believe that a completely superior race of creatures who had been planning an attack for millions of years, and who also managed to correctly guess the locations of the major human settlements on the planet, didn't even analyse the water or the air to see if they could drink it? And what did the crows have anything? And what kind of shitty airliner doesn't carry people? God....what a lame movie.
