Insta review of The Hip Live 8
#16

Folks over at the Letterman group I frequent are pissed something fierce about the MTV coverage. Those on the border are bragging about their CTV access. Smile Seems the Canadian gig overcame the curse of Celine.[/quote]

The CTV coverage blew away MTV. I couldn't stand to watch MTV. Just constant commercials, celebrity interviews, and they showed Green Day about 5 times. They actually interviewed Jimmy Fallon instead of showing Annie Lennox on stage. Good job Canada.

Best moments of the day....IMO of course...

1. Pink FLoyd... they seemed pretty darned inspired.
2. Alysha Keys... I don't like this genre of music but damn can she sing.
3. Simple Plan... blink clones or whatever, but I thought they really rocked
4. Hip... Poets with a better mix would amaze people.
5. The Lincoln Park/J-Z combo was cool...rap is not really my thing but these guys pulled off a rockin set together. It would be nice to see more rappers do their thing with a live band insted of backing tracks.
6. Gordon Lightfoot... If I could read your mind...Goosebumps baby.

Hell I could go on and on...

Jimmy Fallon huh? Talk about political figures of import. Smile

And here, here on the mention of the Lightfoot goosebumps, just chilling.

I also liked how a few folks in Barrie sang lines from "Tears Are Not Enough." I wonder if that song may re-appear tonight with everybody on stage at the end... perhaps "Keep On Rock'n In The Free World?"

Here's how I'm catalouging "Freddie," please feel free to drop any info to update/improve it. I wonder if this one makes the '06 album in some form?

Freddie Mercury: Throughout 2004 and 2005, a rant featuring a line from Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," and referencing that bands legendary lead, emerged during Poets: "Seventy days to cross the ocean/Seventy nights when no one's gunna hear you fall/Like Freddie Mercury/I sometimes too wish I'd never been born at all." It appeared twice during The Hip's July 2 "Live 8" performance in Barrie, Ontario.

Jesus... There is nothing better than THAT voice and THAT song: Hey Jude.

Other then those tv hosts, ctv did a great job. Poets of course was the highlight with the sound trouble in the first 2 and dan's inclusion into the band. One of the best poets IMO. I love how gord squeezed everything he could into the last song both energy and rant wise.

Neil's set was great and the finale was a perfect end to the day!!

I enjoyed Ben Mulroney saying: "And here's Audioslave with the song that put them on the map....{stunned silence, looks at notes...} Black Hole Sun."

He's obviously a fan. But if it had been Ryan Malcolm he was talking about, oh man, he would have been bang on with any and all info.

We got to Park Place at 8:30am, and Sam Roberts was doing a soundcheck; so there were soundchecks done.

spottrax also Wrote:PS...I've been watching all the performances all day from the different shows and the Canadian show was just as good if not better than all the others except London. :thumb:
It was an incredible day and a great event. The performances were solid across the board, except for DMC with Warrick from CSI... (was that him? It looked like him from where I was sitting).

The sound was good from start to finish from where I was sitting... with the exception of DMC.

Chris - how was the crowd for Sam Roberts? They had a great set but the crowd looked like they've never seen SRB. Maybe it was just too early in the concert.

Although I got to Park Place at 8:30am, we didn't get into the park until 11:30 as the line up was really, really long... so long that we were actually lined up on the on ramp for the 400!! I only caught the final song of Sam's set and didn't have a chance to really notice the crowd as we were hurrying to catch the performance.

On another note, did you catch the shot of Gord backstage before going on? You could see the intensity and nerves---he was basically an immovable object staring into space. Cool.

Holy shit! I was working all day, so I pretty much missed everything except for some of the morning performances (U2, Coldplay and Sam Roberts were awesome). Did Neil actually jam with the Hip, or was it one of those grand finale things with everybody on stage?? By the way, that pic is gonna be my wallpaper for the next little while...maybe for the rest of the year. Great photo!
