It's almost too early to say this, knwing the propensity for Hip tunes to "grow", but:

I think Chagrin blows "Family Band" out of the water. I think FB is the second weakest cut on this album. To glossy, too flaky -- too "In View".

Funny, "Chagrin Falls" is always the track I skip over.

Glossy? I think "Family Band" has the least amount of production on it.

To me, It's a classic Hip rock 'n' roll road song from Gord. It's similar to "Puttin' Down," but with some more jam to it.

Another spot-the-influence query -- does any one else think the catchy guitar riff in Luv (sic) sounds like Unforgettable Fire-era U2?

ABSOLUTELY.

I've told the exact same thing to Jenna. I can't help but immediately think of U2 at the intro.....

Hey, at least we agree on this!

The only thing that is clear to me from listening to the album several times is that "In View" is the worst track. I actually kind of like the song but I think in comparison to the rest of the songs, it isn't up to par. It is probably the best song for radio though, if that means anything.

Sorry -- I didn't mean "glossy" in terms of production or engineering, I meant it in terms of musical construction / style. In my opinion, it's not at all "classic" Hip rock (that would be reserved for stuff that would be reminiscent of "Cordelia" or "Three Pistols", etc.). FB sounds infinitely poppier than "classic" Hip rock.....

Really? Chagrin Falls? Really? I'd say Escape plus Emperor is the best 1-2 closer and that Chagrin is along for the ride. You wouldn't have an Ohio bias, would you?

ct

I've only been here for 2 months, so I haven't had time to develop a bias. If I have one, it would be for "The Bastard" (given the mention of Philadelphia) and that's not gonna happen.

It's true. That was one of the first things out of his mouth. I think there's a little bit 'o group brilliance going on around this board.

Maybe I don't get it, but I just can't seem to get into "The Kid's Don't Get It."

I know it's a favourite of quite a few peeps, but the line where he sings "expert straaaannger" and "strannngerrr experts" is dare I say, annoying.

My order so far:

World Container
The Kids Don't Get It
Pretend
Family Band
Fly
The Drop-Off
Last Night I Dreamed You Didn't Love Me
Yer Not The Ocean
Lonely End of the Rink
Luv (sic)
In View

[laliber]

Indeed, Drop Off -> Family Band -> World Container may be the most consistent final three tracks on any Hip album ever.

Be that as it may, I think the top spot is occupied by Phantom Power's trifecta of Chagrin Falls, Escape and Emperor Penguin.

I have always been partial to : On the Verge, Fiddler's Green and The Last of the Unplucked Gems, as the best final three

Great choice -- if I had to pick three enders, that would be the set.

I agree 100%. After hearing the entire record, I was a bit relieved to gain some insight into HOW it could "fit", yet the context doesn't help me appreciate the song any.

It is probably the best song for radio though, if that means anything.

Agreed, but that only reinforces my perspective that it's a weak Tragically Hip tune.

However, this set may grow on me -- it's early yet.

"Poets-Something-Planet" as well as "Grace-Daredevil-Greasy" are my favorite trifectas.

if we are starting an album off then

Looking for a Place to Happen, At the Hundredth Meridian and Wheat Kings

[Ry222]

I'm not a big fan of using the same lyrics in 2 different songs as they did in "the kids" and "Pretend".
I also think the worst part of the album is in "The Kids Don't Get It" when Gord belts "that was eaasssssssyyyyyy" at the beginning of the song. It just doesn't sound right.
However, other than that, the album is unreal from beginning to end.
World Container and Ocean are still my favourite songs

I also agree that it's the weakest song on the record. But even a weak Tragically Hip song is still better than 90% of the shit that you hear on the radio these days. I still like the tune.
