I am regular poster/and lerker, however have changed my name for this thread.
I have recently turned down a promotion, which offered more money, and a higher position.
I stand by my reasons for not taking the position, however feel I am in over my head now with the consequences, with that decision, and the time it took for me to reach it.
I have wasted the time of the people at the other location, in the company who were going to hire me, by taking so long to decide. However I need to live with that situation.
I am wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation?

I have been in your situation many times in my career and know your feelings.
The most memorable was that I was working with a certain company and my girlfriend (now wife) got transfered to another city in which caused me to look for another job. A VP from another group within my current company found out about my situation and created a job in the area of the country that I was going to move to Also at the same time I was interviewing with another company. To cut it short both offered me a job with comparable packages and I decided on leaving the current company to broaden my experience. I later talked with the VP (I was feeling bad because he created a job for me) and told him my reasons and he was perfectly fine with my decison because he also in his past had a similar opportunity and took a different path than I and always wondered what would have become if he went the other way.
In short, I have worked for 3 different companies since graduating college (13yrs ago) and had roughly a dozen offers for other jobs during my career and all decisions to turn down or accept were heart wreching. What I have found is that you have to be content with your decision and then everything will work its way out.

Be happy with your job or you will make yourself and others unhappy.
i would rather make 10 dollars doing what i want to do rather then make 14 dollars doing something that i hate.
its just not worth it!
I'd rather be poor and happy than rich and unhappy.
You did what you thought was right and don't worry about those other people, you need to worry about you.
If you did make the wrong decision, that's just how life goes. Consider it a learning experience.
