I agree that there is a moral dilemma in filesharing. However, according to the laws in Canada, filesharing is currently legal as defined by the state.

This kind of binary thinking is what got the record industry into the spot it's in presently. There has to be a better model out there.

We've been gouged for years with ridiculous prices and, when a new format comes out that presents the industry with a new opportunity to enjoy revenue and reinvigorate the model for music distribution, all they can say is: "stealing is wrong!".

If they didn't have there heads so far up their... they would have seen this coming, proposed a system where everybody gets a share and everybody gets to enjoy a great hockey season.

Oh, that's another matter.

Dude... That's what things like iTunes are doing now. Most albums cost $10 on that site. Cheaper than buying it in stores, and while you don't get the physical cd, etc... most people are happy with just the music.

I do agree that it's frustrating to not be able to buy something online (especially when it's such a well known thing), but they're adding stuff all the time, it'll come eventually.

We've been working with the Itunes folks, and should have the entire catalogue up soon.

Of course we all should support the business, and refrain from illegal file sharing. We must protect the artists!

Uh, well, the copyright law is the copyright law, and its letter says otherwise. Filesharing is tolerated in Canada because (unlike the US) we have copyright collectives that collect money from levies on things like CDs and redistribute it (for whatever it's worth) to copyright holders. But to say "filesharing is legal" is a gross oversimplification.

Try testing the limits by carrying it out on a large scale. Take the next Hip release, copy it, and distribute it for free by having people stand outside HMV, handing out copies. See how long you last. Have you checked all the precedents?

It's like saying "filesharing hurts artists" or "filesharing helps artists"; those statements are theoretical and aren't supported by any real facts. Both are true; both are false.

[rant] You have to watch for articles written by some lawyer or another, whose name escapes me (and which I don't care to research, for libel reasons ), who continually offers the opinion that filesharing is legal while failing to point out that his opinions are untested arguments. His position is ideological; he has also argued against granting copyright protection to photographers in Canada on the grounds that this would lead to invasions of privacy, an argument that is demonstrably false. It's a clear scare tactic designed to create a bloc of (ignorant) public opinion opposing a proposed change to the copyright law. It's plainly dishonest. The man should go into politics. But that's beside the point. [/rant]

I've gotta agree with most of that...

I think the best way to say it is that filesharing is NOT illegal in Canada...
