I find that people who were born in the 80's hate the 80's. People my age, born in the 70's loved the 80's. I started school in the late 70's and the 80's were my school years. I graduated in 91. Those were simpler times and I wish they had been more enjoyable and I had understood how easy I really did have it.
They really were great times:-D
People now think the 80s are cool because they remember those-coming-of-age years with a fond poignancy. The gloss of years makes wishes come true: instead of wishing you were Ferris Bueller or Samantha Baker or Allison Reynolds, now you were. And of course, it was just as good as the movie.
In the 80s, the 60s were the coolest decade ever, and that was because all the baby boomers were looking fondly back on their formative years and mistaking themselves for Billy and Wyatt. The great mass of kids who never protested Vietnam or took drugs back then grew up to tell their contemporaries how all those protests became lost in a Purple Haze.
Then the 70s were cool, as people forgot just how awful it all was and mistook themselves for Tony Manero.
So now it's the 80s turn.
The 1980s were vile, and their only good feature was that they ended early. They started to stagger around 1987 and by late 1988 or early 1989, we could finally breathe a sigh of relief that they were over. This is the main advantage the 80s have over the 1970s, which were also pretty unspeakable and which persisted in lasting a full decade.
Baby boomer propaganda is pretty powerful, and I'm not old enough to remember them, but the 60s were pretty crass. Mind you, the 60s only lasted three years in the boomer mind, as the years up to 1967 were just the long shadow of the 50s, which was an irredeemably ugly time.
Mass culture has been grotesque since time immemorial. Me, I just can't wait for another 20 years to pass, so I can hear how cool Britney Spears was and how wonderfully liberating and comfortable it was to wear a thong.
That's an interesting notion. Maybe I'll go try it -- all in the interest of science, of course.
