Tragically Hip Photo Exhibit
#16

I went to the opening gala last night and it was fantastic! As MAv pointed out, Richard is a super nice guy, and was a gracious host.

MAv, Rob Baker and a guy who looked exactly like Sean Penn all made appearances before I left the event. (MAv, I've got discs for you - see you next Sunday.)

And for those with a few extra bucks in their pockets, all of the prints are for sale.

eTtalk Daily and http://web2.0television.com/ were there with their cameras rolling... keep an eye out for the broadcast as both of them interviewed Rob & Richard.

Awesome art show last night, and free beer! :jump

I bought one of those limited edition posters of the event. I got # 100 and had Richard sign it. $30, a good deal.

There were some great large collages that Richard put together that were fantastic. They were selling for $1000 each. They had TTH music playing in the background and at one end of the gallery they had a slide show with all the shots in constant rotation.

Bobby B was there so I had him sign my Henhouse cd(man I love that cd). Nice guy. Very friendly.

I suppose I should have asked him if they were thinking of playing NYE this year. Damn.

The exhibit runs from Oct 1st to Nov 26 and it's a great reason to get out to the Distillery District. I love that part of town.

Great evening met some cool people... including this dude http://www.jian.ca who was from Moxy Fruvous. Bumped into a few regular Hipsters... Spoke with Bobby briefly and also with Richard Beland... over 1200 concerts he's been to... wow talk about a dream Job.

Here's a few photos from last evening for those who are far away.

Any chance that any of that art is listed online for those of us who don't live in TO?

www.richardbeland.com has some of the photos, but it does not list what was on display or what is for sale.

I don't know how things are for Beland, and he seems to have a great and productive relationship with the Hip, but usually concert photographers are treated like dirt. Bad contracts and heavy restrictions, and they get kicked out of the show following the second song. So not really a dream job.

I missed this show by a day. I actually end up visiting that gallery often when I go to TO, but my TO visit this time was on 30 Sept. Sad

FYI: The show is not in the gallery - it's across the courtyard on the 4th floor of Building 5.

I was more leaning to the fact that he had been to 1200 concerts.. being a music lover... that would be enjoyable... work for 3 songs and then enjoy the show.

Richard's one of the coolest guys I know and an incredible photographer. It was great working with him to help promote the show. I'm glad to see a ton of people made it out to the opening. It looks like a really cool space. I wish I could have been there. You should definitely stop by and see the show if you are in town. :thumb:

No Skippy's right, from what I understand, being a concert photographer isn't all that glamourous. Normally, they allow the photographer 2-3 songs in which to shoot, and then said photographer is ushered out the door. There usually isn't any "sticking around" to watch the show. You are there to do a job, and that usually means working under some extreme pressure.

Doesn't mean that I wouldn't love to do it!!!

And it also doesn't mean that it happens to everyone. I am sure that Richard has a good enough relationship with the Hip (as well as many other artists from what I understand) that he probably has full access all the time. And THAT my friends is an excellent job! :thumb:

Iknow in Europe he was there from start to finish at the show's he attended.

For those going keep an eye out for me and my video camera in the Pardiso shot, 1st balcony left side, and for our entire crew at the shot outside of Sheppards Bush Empire. Some of us made it into some other shots as well.

Oh yeah, and the band in the shots was pretty good too!

For those of you who don't know, Richard's full time job is Rock Photographer. He has been shooting the hip for at least 15 years. He is not your typical news photographer who gets three songs in the pit and then is forced to leave. He stays for the full show and goeas where he wants - at least at Hip shows. He has shot pretty much any major band you can think of and shoots for magazines as well. So, he does not, just shoot live. Richard, has a job most music fans would kill for . . . and his work is amazing.

Oh, and I believe his prints will soon be onsale online.

I'm really upset I missed this. The flyer said it started October 1, so when I was in town last weekend, I went to take a look. No dice, and the girls in the gallery were oh so happy to let me know I was an idiot for even bothering to come that day.

I digress; the fresh air that afternoon really killed the post birthday hangover, so it wasn't all for not. Regardless, this sounds like an awesome event, and I hope to see some of these prints online soon.

Cheers,

Pat

It runs until November 25th, so there is still plenty of time to catch it.
