I heard thousands of deaths will never be officially recorded because so many hundreds or thousands of people were swept out to sea with no trace. It was also the most powerful earthquake on earth since the 60s, a horrible tragedy...I hope for their sake it doesn't get worse before it gets better (IE aftershockes).

A friend of mine has parents sailing around the world and they're somewhere around Malaysia right now. No word yet, I really hope they're okay.

That's horrible, hopefully they were on the safe side of the bay and they'll be alright.
Having to sit and wait till news comes in about loved ones in the area must be unbearable.

Turns out I knew another guy down there. Opened up the paper this morning and read about a family friends first hand account of events in Thailand. He was there with his wife and baby girl on holidays. They decided for the pool that day over the beach which likely saved thier lives as many many people were swept out to sea from that very beach.
Also turns out that the others we knew on the boat are safe in Singapore.

Heard 68,000 plus this morning. Such an awful catastrophe. Makes you stop and think about what you have, and how quickly it can be sucked away. Those days stuck in traffic don't seem so bad now. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who suffered loss.

Well said. I'm impressed at the number of local organizations that are setting up charity drives for things like water, medical supplies, etc. Now really is the time to be generous.

What's really impressed me is India's resillence (sp?) in the face of this disaster. I read this morning that they have turned down foreign aid because they had the resources to meet the demands and they have launched rescue missions to the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

80,000 now confirmed dead. The fact that 25% of the population of coastal Indonesia is dead is the most shocking thing I've ever heard...imagine if 1/4 of all the people you know suddenly disappeared. There are no words...

No words whatsoever..
Stores started selling firework here today, people were cueing (sp?) up for it, waiting outside in the cold for 40 mins to pay large sums of money for something they'll be able to enjoy for merely a few seconds. I understand parents might want to purchase some to entertain the kids but how I wish these people, or at least a portion of them, would sacrifice their firework this year and donate the money instead to Asia....what a lesson for the kids that would be too.
