Sam Roberts by far in my opinion! I loved seeing him up close and personal at the U.S show! Unfortunately, when the Canadian part of the tour rolled around, we got The Joel Plaskett Emergency. Oh well...
The Rheostatics have also added a fantastic element though

I'd say
Blues Traveler
Flies on Fire
Wilco
You guys that are dissing some of the bands just by seeing a live show should check out a few of those bands cd's. By Divine Right's CD that they toured in support of with the hip is great, as well as Joel Plaskett's Down at the Khyber. Check em out.

6) Rheostatics
7) By Divine Right
8) Change of Heart
And my favorite opener of any concert would have been NO OPENER on the Evening With shows! More Hip is better than anyone, even Sammy

Sam Roberts tops my list, but I never got to see the Watchmen, the Rheos, or Moxy open for them.
Mikey -- did No Doubt actually open for the Hip at some point?
Is there an archive anywhere of the Hip's opening acts? Brazle's site, maybe?

Favourites would be Sam Roberts and Sarah Harmer (though my appriciation for Sarah was not nearly as high as it should be the three times I've seen her open for the Hip). Stereophonics are up there too.
No Doubt could have very well open for the Hip. Stranger bands have certainly, like Goldfinger, who Gord thanks for opening on the 95 LA House Of Blues show.
Plus they were billed as headliners for Eden Fest. That means a lot of huge mid-90s alternative bands have opened for them.
Cheers
Pat

It's possible that he was saying "No doubt" as in the expression...

I can't believe no one has yet said the one, the only DEREK TRUCKS BAND. They were INCREDIBLE the one time I saw them - easily the best opening act I have ever seen (possible exception being Guster open for BNL).
DTB opened for TTH during the early legs of the PP tour in 1998. Awesome improvisational blues music, with a sick, sick maniac of a drummer. Absolutely amazing.
