There's a letter in the Ottawa Citizen today from a woman who says the pot smoke at the Hip show ruined the experience for her and her husband. She wishes security had done more to stop it...
Now, I'm not a Midnight Toker, but some people do call me Maurice on occasion, and the Marley-toothpicks have never bothered me at shows. In fact, it's all part of the experience at this point.
Anybody ever been overwhelmed by the green cloud at concerts?

Yes, my wife can't stand it. She had to leave the show in London after the first encore.
As a sign that I've got my priorities straight, I stayed to the bitter end. That makes a double entendre out of "facing the music."
Funny how so many people complain about obnoxious drinking and obnoxious singing, but pot-smoking is viewed as completely benign.

Well, It can't be stopped. I don't smoke it, but a hip show is a place where you can come and enjoy it without fear of getting arrested...so..what can you do?

Exactly. It is pretty much par for the course at a concert. I work at the ACC, and there have been only a few concerts where the smell of pot was not overwhelming. (Even Rod Stewart fans were lighting up!) But, what are you going to do, right? The same goes for people who get angry at cheering, singing and dancing.... IT IS A CONCERT! Most people are there to relax, dance, sing... and yes, smoke pot... and listed to great music.
And while I do sympathize with people who actually have to leave because it is bothering them, unfortunately I don't think it is something that is going to greatly improve anytime soon.

Well, I pretty much loathe the 'Hippy Patchouli' odor that permeates the audience of many of my favorite concerts, but not once has it 'ruined the experience'.
When it does, I think it's time I either checked my ability to be tolerant of other people and things, or stopped going places where there will be large crowds of other people and their things....

stephen, i think i was in the group right beside you in ottawa. i deciced to ask the bouncer if we could smoke a joint since we didn't want to lose those seats. he said he didn't care, they were only paid to keep people off the stage. as soon as we lit up though, one of the security girls from the back came up right away so we put it out.
i don't always smoke at shows, but certainty don't have a problem when people do. i guess it's like going to bars as a non-smoker, you just have to put up with it for a while. it kind of adds to the ambience in a way!

I've only been to two concerts where it almost overwhelmed the experience: Neil Young at Copps on Hallowe'en in 1996, and the Beastie Boys at The ACC last month.
At Copps, it was like the crowd was trying to hotbox the arena.

....The only problem I have is when seeing them in Canada or near the Canadian border..... that BC "Kind-Bud" makes my body numb from the knees up.
The local greens just give me a headache.
:nooooo
I won't be lured by your Mexican pot...

I don't like the smell of pot, and I'm risking a postive drug test every time. Maybe I should wear a gas mask
