The Hip to enter Cdn. Music Hall of Fame
WINNIPEG (CP) -- Renowned rockers The Tragically Hip will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at next year's Juno Awards, the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences said Tuesday.

The band, which has earned 11 Junos over its illustrious 21-year career, will be officially honoured at a gala dinner April 2 and during the television broadcast of the 2005 Juno Awards on April 3.

The 34th annual awards will be held in Winnipeg, where the Hip was scheduled to play Tuesday night at the new MTS Centre as part of a cross-Canada tour to promote its latest album In Between Evolution.

"They have not only excelled at their craft on stages around the world, they have also redefined what music is here at home in Canada, academy president Melanie Berry said in a release.

"They have created a genre that is distinctively their own, transcending musical stereotypes."

Band members Gordon Downie, Rob Baker, Johnny Fay, Paul Langlois and Gord Sinclair, all from Kingston, Ont., have earned widespread critical acclaim throughout their career.

Their lyrics are known for their patriotic roots, from their hit song named after the small Ontario village of Bobcaygeon to references to hockey and the maritime sea.

They have sold over six million albums in Canada, having had 10 releases in 14 years.

The Hip will join more than 30 other hall of famers, a group that includes Glenn Gould, Joni Mitchell, Anne Murray, The Guess Who, Oscar Peterson, Rush and Neil Young and The Band.

Good to see. So does this mean they will get more time at the Juno awards, instead of giving it to some rough cut band.

Wow. A star on the Canadian walk of fame, performing for the Queen, the Grey Cup halftime show, and now the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. And this is all just in the last 2 years.

I'm hoping during the Juno broadcast they'll do one of those montage things where you see younger bands covering Hip songs and talking about how much they influenced them. I remember they did that for Rush a few years ago and it was pretty damn cool.

does anyone have a video of the performances from the Juno Awards in 2005 - both Fully Completely and Grace Too are Mint...if I recall Pope John Paul had just passed hours earlier and Gord got censored - or that is my recollection 5 years later.

My Last Pope John Paul

He also sang the chorus from the Weakerthans' "Aside" during Grace, Too. I'll never forget that.

"I'm leaning on this broken fence, between past and present tense."
