Post the lyrics of one of your favorite songs

Downtown - Neil Young

There's a place called downtown
Where the hippies all go
And they dance the charleston
And they do the limbo
Yeah the hippies all go there
'Cause they want to be seen
It's like a room full of pictures
It's like a psychedelic dream
Downtown let's go downtown
Downtown tonight
Downtown let's have a party
Downtown at night
Yeah it's right around the corner
Up and down the hill
When you hear the band playing
It's gonna give you a chill
Give your money to the gateman
Young blood in his eye
Hold on to your baby
When you slip into the sky
Downtown let's go downtown
Downtown tonight
Downtown hear the band playin'
Downtown all right
Jimi's playin' in the back room
Led Zeppelin on stage
There's a mirrorball twirlin'
And a note from Page
Like a water-washed diamond
In a river of sin
Goin' down like a whirlpool
When you get sucked in
Downtown let's go downtown
Downtown tonight
Downtown hear the band playin'
Downtown all right
Downtown let's go downtown
Downtown tongith
Downtown let's have a party
Downtown all right

I love these lyrics...

Bruce Cockburn - Justice

What's been done in the name of Jesus?
What's been done in the name of Buddha?
What's been done in the name of Islam?
What's been done in the name of man?
What's been done in the name of liberation?
And in the name of civilization?
And in the name of race?
And in the name of peace?

Everybody
Loves to see
Justice done
On somebody else

Can you tell me how much bleeding
It takes to fill a word with meaning?
And how much, how much death
It takes to give a slogan breath?
And how much, how much, how much flame
Gives light to a name
For the hollow darkness
In which nations dress?

Everybody
Loves to see
Justice done
On somebody else

Everybody's seen the things they've seen
We all have to live with what we've been
When they say charity begins at home
They're not just talking about a toilet and a telephone
Got to search the silence of the soul's wild places
For a voice that can cross the spaces
These definitions that we love create --
These names for heaven, hero, tribe and state

Everybody
Loves to see
Justice done
On somebody else

Not About to Lose - Ron Sexsmith

If I were to listen to my doubts
I'd think my time was running out
But I'm old enough to do it
And young enough to do it again

I'm not about to lose
I'm not about to lose
This feeling that I've found

If I were to listen to the sound
Of that little voice, I might turn back now
But I won't be taking fear's advice
Not after all I've sacrificed

I'm not about to lose
I'm not about to lose
This feeling that I've found

Though my heart is overcome at times
Still it knows
Where it's coming from
And where it must go

Just like an oak I'll take my stand
But like a willow I can bend

I'm not about to lose
I'm not about to lose
This feeling that I've found

The Who - You Better You Bet.

You better you better you bet.

I call you on the telephone my voice too rough with cigarettes.
I sometimes feel I should just go home but I'm dealing with a memory
that never forgets
I love to hear you say my name especially when you say yes
I got your body right now on my mind and I drunk myself blind to the
sound of old T-Rex
To the sound of old T-Rex - who's next?

[Chorus:]

When I say I love you you say you better
You better you better you bet
When I say I need you you say you better
You better you better you bet
You better bet your life
Or love will cut you like a knife

I want those feeble minded axes overthrown
I'm not into your passport picture I just like your nose
You welcome me with open arms and open legs
I know only fools have needs but this one never begs

I don't really mind how much you love me
A little is really alright
When you say come over and spend the night
Tonight

[Chorus: (as above)]

I lay on the bed with you
We could make some book of records
Your dog keeps licking my nose
And chewing up all those letters
Saying "you better"
You better bet your life

You better love me, all the time now
You better shove me back into line now
You better love me, all the time now
You better shove me back into line now.

I showed up late one night with a neon light for a visa
But knowing I'm so eager to fight can't make letting me in any easier
I know I been wearing crazy clothes and I look pretty crappy
Sometimes
But my body feels so good and I still sing a razor line everytime.

And when it comes to all night living
I know what I'm giving
I've got it all down to a tee
And it's free.

[Chorus: (as above)]

Beatles

I like how this girl is trying to wheel him and he goes and sleeps in the tub.

I once had a girl,
Or should I say
She once had me.
She showed me her room,
Isn’t it good?
Norwegian wood.
She asked my to stay and told me sit anywhere,
So I looked around and I noticed there wasn’t a chair.
I sat on a rug
Biding my time,
Drinking her wine.
We talked until two,
And then she said,
‘It’s time for bed’.
She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh,
I told her I didn’t, and crawled off to sleep in the bath.
And when I awoke
I was alone,
This bird has flown,
So I lit a fire,
Isn’t it good?
Norwegian wood.

John Hiatt
"Crossing Muddy Waters"

My baby’s gone and I don’t know why
She let out this morning
Like a rusty shot in a hollow sky
Left me without warning
Sooner than the dogs could bark
And faster than the sun rose
Down to the banks in an old mule car
She took a flatboat across the shallow

Left me in my tears to drown
She left a baby daughter
Now the water’s wide and deep and brown
She’s crossing muddy waters

Tobacco standing in the fields
Be rotten come november
And a bitter heart will not reveal
A spring that love remembers
When that sweet brown girl of mine
Her black eyes are ravens
We broke the bread and drank the wine
From a jug that she’d been saving

Baby’s crying and the daylight’s gone
That big oak tree is groaning
In rush of wind and river of song
I can hear my sweetheart moaning
Crying for her baby child
Or crying for her husband
Crying for that river’s wild
To take her from her loved ones

Left me in my tears to drown
She left a baby daughter
Now the water’s wide and deep and brown
She’s crossing muddy waters

Ben Folds - Still Fightin' It

good morning son
i am a bird
wearing a brown polyester shirt
you want a coke?
maybe some fries?
the roast beef combo's only nine ninety five
but it's okay
you don't have to pay
i've got all the change

everybody knows
it hurts to grow up
but everybody does
it's so weird to be back here
let me tell you what
the years go on and
we're still fighting it
and you're so much like me
i'm sorry

good morning son
twenty years from now
maybe we'll both sit down
and have a few beers
and i can tell
you about today
and how i picked you up
and everything changed
it was pain
sunny days and rain
i knew you'd feel the same things

everybody knows
it sucks to grow up
and everybody does
and so weird to be back here
let me tell you what
the years go on and
we're still fighting it

you'll try and try
and one day you'll fly
away from me

it was pain
sunny days and rain
i knew you'd feel the same things

everybody knows
it hurts to grow up
and everybody does
and so weird to be back here
let me tell you what

the years go on and
we're still fighting it
and you're so much like me
i'm sorry

Hey everyone, some great and interesting choices here! :thumb:

I'd like to add a couple of my own.

"The Ascent of Stan" - Ben Folds

pangs of silence from the room upstairs
do you read what they're saying about you
that you're no fun
since the war was won
in fact, you have become
all of the things you've always run from

the ascent of stan
textbook hippy man
get rest while you can

all the time we had
being poor was
not such a drag in hindsight
and you wondered
why your father was
so resigned
now you don't wonder anymore

the ascent of stan
textbook hippy man
get rest while you can
once you wanted revolution
now you're the institution
how's it feel to be the man?
it's no fun to be the man

"A Crow Left of the Murder" - Incubus

un... learn... me...
ditch what I read, behind what I heard
look... find... free...
yet! do you get it yet! do you get it!

from here on it's instinctual
even straight roads meander
every piece contains a map of it all! it all!

ev... i... dence
in the march of the ant, pulse of the sea
look... find... free...
yet! do you get it yet! do you get it!

from here on it's instinctual
even straight roads meander
every piece contains a map of it all! it all!
out of line and indivisible
a crow left of the murder
every piece contains a map of it all! it all!

everything I ever
wanted to know
everything I ever
wanted to see

un... learn... me...
look... find... free...
yet! do you get it yet! do you get it yet! do you get it yet!

This song's kind of the story of my life.

"I'm an Adult Now" - The Pursuit of Happiness

Well I don't hate my parents
I don't get drunk just to spite 'em
I've got my own reasons to drink now
Think I'll call my Dad up and invite him
I can sleep in till noon anytime I want
But there's not many days that I do
Gotta get up and take on that world
When you're an adult it's no cliche, it's the truth!

'Cause I'm an adult now
I'm an adult now
I've got the problems of an adult on my head and on my shoulders
I'm an adult now

I don't even look at young girls anymore
People will think I'm some kind of pervert!
Adult sex is either boring or dirty
Young people, they can get away with murder!
I don't write songs about girls anymore
I have to write songs about women
No more boy meets girl, boy loses girl
More like, man tries to understand what the hell went wrong!

'Cause I'm an adult now
I'm an adult now
I've got the problems of an adult on my head and on my libido
I'm an adult now

I can't take any more illicit drugs
I can't afford any artificial joy
I'd sure look like a fool, dead in a ditch somewhere with a mind full of chemicals like some cheese-eating high school boy!

'Cause I'm an adult now
I'm an adult now
I've got the problems of an adult on my head and on my shoulders
I'm an adult now

(long kick-ass guitar solo) :thumb:

Sometimes my head hurts and sometimes my stomach hurts
And I guess that it won't be long
Before I'm sitting in a room with a bunch of people whose necks and backs are aching, whose sight and hearing's fading, and who just can't seem to get it up!
Speaking of hearing I can't take too much loud music
I mean I like to play it, but I sure don't like the racket.
Noise, but I can't hear anything, just guitars screaming, screaming, screaming!
Some guy screaming in a leather jacket... WHOOAA!!!

I'm an adult now
I'm an adult now
I've got the problems of an adult on my head and on my shoulders
I'm an adult now
ooh oh ooh oh I'm an adult now
I'm an adult now
I've got the problems of an adult on my head and on my shoulders
I'm an adult now

This song never sounds better than at 2am on a sweaty August night driving down a backroad with the speakers cranked.

I was a little too tall
Could've used a few pounds
Tight pants points hardly reknown
She was a black-haired beauty with big dark eyes
And points all her own sitting way up high
Way up firm and high

Out past the cornfields where the woods got heavy
Out in the back seat of my '60 Chevy
Workin' on mysteries without any clues
Workin' on our night moves
Tryin' to make some front page drive-in news
Workin' on our night moves
In the summertime
In the sweet summertirne

We weren't in love, oh no, far from it
We weren't searchin' for some pie in the sky summit
We were just young and restless and bored
Livin' by the sword
And we'd steal away every chance we could
To the backroom, to the alley or the trusty woods
I used her, she used me
But neither one cared
We were gettin' our share
Workin' on our night moves
Tryin' to lose the awkward teenage blues
Workin' on our night moves
And it was summertime

And oh the wonder
We felt the lightning
And we waited on the thunder
Waited on the thunder

I awoke last night to the sound of thunder
How far off I sat and wondered
Started humming a song from 1962
Ain't it funny how the night moves
When you just don't seem to have as much to lose
Strange how the night moves
With autumn closing in

*BUMP* This song just floored me today, I dont know why exactley, Ive heard it hundreds of times, but today it sounded different, it felt different. It was like the words and music just went through me and took over my body. Very cool feeling, plus I was hungover like hell, but thats another story. Strange days have found us my friends.

Going To California

Going To California
(Page/Plant)

Spent my days with a woman unkind, Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine.
Made up my mind to make a new start, Going To California with an aching in my heart.
Someone told me there's a girl out there with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair.
Took my chances on a big jet plane, never let them tell you that they're all the same.
The sea was red and the sky was grey, wondered how tomorrow could ever follow today.
The mountains and the canyons started to tremble and shake
as the children of the sun began to awake.

Seems that the wrath of the Gods
Got a punch on the nose and it started to flow;
I think I might be sinking.
Throw me a line if I reach it in time
I'll meet you up there where the path
Runs straight and high.

To find a queen without a king,
They say she plays guitar and cries and sings... la la la
Ride a white mare in the footsteps of dawn
Tryin' to find a woman who's never, never, never been born.
Standing on a hill in my mountain of dreams,
Telling myself it's not as hard, hard, hard as it seems. Cry

Imagine a world before the "beginning was the word.”
