I appreciate the honesty, mark, you and the other 7 who aren't afraid to admit it! That's what I was curious about. It says a lot that over 40 people with widely varying tastes in music sauid they are their fave though...I think we just might have a pretty good band on our hands here!

I used to be almost only Hip, as I have gotten old, my taste in music has changed, and I think there music has gotten weaker the last few efforts. But I am a more bluesy person when it comes to music.

I'm lucky to be in sales because at least once or twice a month I "SELL" someone (usually my wife) on why I am going to another HIP CONCERT, buying another Hip item or posting here on HIPBASE.
It's at the point now where sometimes when someone asks if I am obsessed with TTH I just say "YES" .... it usually ends the conversation much quicker...
Some spouses lose their husbands to Football, Hockey or Golf... etc. and I do play & watch some of those sports.... but nothing has brought me the enjoyment over the years like TTH's music & over all culture.
I've met people that I'd never have met...
I've read books that I'd never heard of...
I've travelled to places I'd never have gone to...
I've researched things I'd never have thought to...
This TTH EXPERIENCE that I am having has accelerated my PASSION for music in many new directions and it all makes sense to me.
Rochester's Show last week reminded me of why I like the HIP so much... I can't even explain it ...and don't really care to.

Ya, The Hip are definitely my favourite Neil. I'm also into U2, Oasis, BNL, and some classic stuff like Zeppelin, Floyd, and Rush. Can't beat the live sound of the Hip though.

Most definitely, the Hip are my favorite. I had a phase when the Smashing Pumpkins came out with 'Mellon Collie..' that could compare, but it didn't last long enough, and I was only 11. So as of now, the Hip most certainly are #1. Who can predict the future though?

I voted 'no'....
Led Zeppelin is my favorite band ever.
Pink Floyd would probably be second-favorite.
AC/DC might be third, but so might The Hip. Jane's Addiction would've challenged for #3 if they had made more records before that initial disbandment....
However, I might give The Tragically Hip the nod when considering my favorite activeband.
Before guitarist Michael Houser died, my favorite active band was probably Widespread Panic, but Houser's influence was too great for it to hold its reign on the top of that list.
By the way, Grooveless - did you ever get a chace to listen to any Widespread? If so, what, and what did you think?

I haven't yet...I downloaded two live songs, actually, and the nine-minute Space Wrangler has already found its way onto a mix CD. But that's all I could find on WinMX and I haven't had time to check out our record stores.
I am doing a big Hip B&P for a guy here who is going to send a few Panic bootlegs as a thank-you...when I hear an entire concert I'll be able to judge them properly! I'll let you know what I think then!

Three still-active artists---Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan---rotate for the title of my all-time favourites, depending on the strength of their most recent work, and how much I happen to be into their back catalogue at any given moment. And you can add The Beatles to that list. For my money, Beatles/Dylan/Waits/Costello are among the very few songwriters of the postwar era whose work will endure for generations to come.
The Hip are clearly below that in my books. They slipped somewhat for me after IVL and M@W ...but in any case, I'm a fan of songwriting, and the Hip have never been the equal of Dylan or Waits or Costello or Lennon/McCartney on the elemental level of 'pure song,' IMHO.
But here's a question: if you factor in Downie's solo work, does that make a difference? Adding Gord's solo stuff to the Hip's body of work leads to a collective oeuvre that ranks higher, for me, than the Hip's stuff alone. A few more CDs like CMG and I could easily rate 'Gordon Downie + the Hip' with my iconic foursome.

Yaknow, Dave Matthews is obviously a successful artist, and judging from how many times he's mentioned in this Tragically Hip forum, has a number of dedicated fans but...ummm...never mind. :?
