Do You Like Tim McCarver?

tigerthelion Wrote:Sorry, I got on a rant about Jeter. I just can't take this overexposure he gets. He is by far the most overrated SS in the game.

I can understand how one can be nauseated by the level of exposure Jeter gets, because he gets a ton. But don't make the mistake of equating overexposure to being overrated. Jeter has a career batting average of .315. That's good enough for fourth-highest in MLB history for the shortstop position (both active and inactive). That's higher than Cal Ripken's average. And higher than that of Ernie Banks, Lou Boudreau, Joe Cronin, Joe Sewell, Robin Yount, even A-Rod.

The 'overexposure' you refer to is merely a reflection of the way he has performed in October. His postseason BA is .385 (392 AB). That's just sick! Whether we like it or not, nothing draws the spotlight like establishing a history of clutch performance in big games when the whole world is watching.

As far as his defense goes, he is nothing incredibly special, and I don't know too many baseball minds who try to argue otherwise....

tigerthelion Wrote:It might just be me but I think the play against Oakland was blown way out of proportion. I don't think Jeter did anything special. He tossed a ball about two feet to Posada. It wasn't that great of a play.

Sorry tiger, but I gotta dispute this, too. It's not about the athleticism of the play that made it so special (altough it was rather athletic) - it was the awareness he used which allowed him to execute it, and more importantly, the context of the ballgame in which he made it. The Yanks were down 2-0 in that ALDS, and were leading 1-0 in that game. Giambi's run would've tied the game in the seventh inning, and the go-ahead run would've been in scoring position. Furthermore, on a double to right, the first baseman is the cut-off man....Jeter saw the throw heading offline, and busted his ass over into foul ground off the first baseline to gather it in and shove it to Posada. Inning over, and the Yanks won that game 1-0. They eventually went on to the World Series.

I saw this and it was like BWAHAHAHAH!!!!

I HATE the man. He said some evil remark about the Montreal Expos years ago and I hated him then because he talks down to the fans like we don't know shit about baseball but I REALLY started to hate him then.

Last night while watching the game I just kept yelling "SHUT UP TIM!"

  :jump

Nothing like watching baseball with on mute with Road Apples playing in the background...I am blissfully ignorant of all these announcer comments you guys are talking about!

I think Jack Buck was one of the best announcers, I will never forget the Braves/Twins World series. RIP.

Stephen dame is just evil.

We never know if he's kidding or serious. Twisted bastard!

Seriously, if he's not joking. It's like having a poll about liking Don Cherry or Don *ahem* Ron Mclean. Baseball is our hockey down here.

My favourite McCarverism of the game: "If the Red Sox do end up winning, I wouldn't classify it as miraculous."

That's right. It was the first time in the history of Major League Baseball that a team came back from an 0-3 deficit. But in McCarver's world, it's no big whoop.

I said Jeter was alright. He has done well in the playoffs but he gets credit while others who have done just as much in the playoffs don't get the credit.

As far as being overrated, I think I am justified in saying that. This series against Boston for instance he hit like .180 or something and there was no mention of his poor play. It's alright to praise a guy but when he's doing poorly it's your duty to criticize him also. I think he has had a very good career but I still think he is overrated because the media talks about him like he is an all time top three SS or something!

Again, Jeter's awareness was overrated on the play against Oakland. All he did was run over to get the ball and toss it to Posada. Most SS in the league would have done that I think.

When I think of Jeter, I think that he is the opposite of Larry David's character in Curb Your Enthusiasm. David is the victim of bad circumstances while Jeter is the beneficiary of very good circumstances. Jeter could strike out and yet somehow something would happen that would benefit the Yankees. Jeter is beyond criticism in the media.

You see how many times they showed Jeter's ugly mug after that hit that got the Yanks on the board? WOW, Jeter got an RBI single. Now let's show him saying "c'mon guys". What a leader. haha

ROFL when did the world's biggest clueless man say that?? :lol Does he even realize that the Red Sox are the FIRST major league baseball team to come back from a 3-0 deficit in the ALCS?? Or any of the baseball championship series? The only two teams to come back from a 3-0 deficit in the MLB,NFL or NHL championships are from the '42 Leafs and and some other hockey team! How do you not see that as an amazing miracle?

Not only that, but what about McCarver and his: "I've never seen that expression from Jeter in the nine years he's been here" comment?

Huh? You've never seen Jeter say "C'mon guys" before? Oh right - forgot your head is usually up Jeter's ass.

Yeah, agree 100 percent. haha Big Grin

What did he say about not being "miraculous"? Didn't he say something like, "i wouldn't call it miraculous but I would call it an overwhelming accomplishment" or something like that.

It sounded to me like just an attempt to say something, anything. Like when Bart says something stupid on THe Simpsons and everybody stops in their tracks and he goes "What? I haven't said anything for a while!"
