And that's why baseball is God's game
#1

Democracy is great. When everybody gets a chance, there's always hope. You can't run out the clock, you can't put a knee down, you can't dump it in, you can't hog posession.

No matter how many times you score on your 27 outs, the other guy has 27 outs of his own. Last night's game was a clinic in that great democratic game, it really aint over till it's over.

Ken Burns was right: baseball really is God's game.

I'm supposed to be in a night class tonight... the hell with that, bring on game #2.

Well here's something I can agree with you 110% on, Dame.

The sport of baseball is in a league of its own.

Cool. Seven more of us, and we've got a squad... I call First Base.

I'd offer the services of my left arm on the hill, if I had more rotator cuff and fewer bone chips floating around in my elbow. That adds up to about a year's worth of rehab after the necessary surgeries. So I guess I'll call "centerfield". Cry

I've played football, basketball and baseball competitively (and hockey not-so-competitively), and I found pitching to be the most rewarding position to play in any of these sports (quarterback is sweet, but you take a pounding). Essentially, you can control the entire outcome of the game....quite intense. There is so much art in baseball that I cannot fathom how a thinking man (or woman) can not be completely enamored by it.

Ya, I used to pitch, blew out my shoulder, so that no longer works out. I guess I'll take shortstop, the captain of the infield type thing, glory hog and such...

I guess we'd have to play out of Kingston...?

Well I used to pitch and play a third. Haven't pitched in years though so I'd prefer the third position, but the shoulder and elbow are still strong so if needed I'll chuck a few.

As for Esthete's comment on how you can't fathom how a thinking man or woman can't be completely enamored by the game.... I tend to agree, but my wife, who is by all accounts, smarter than me cannot stand to watch it. Needless to say she's not a fan of the great month of October baseball. For me though, nothing beats watching the game with a beer in hand.

Bring on game 2 tonight. I'm just choked that I'll have to miss a lot of it because of my 2 week trip down under starting on Sunday. I hope like hell the world series goes the full 7 games cause that way I'll get to catch game 6 and 7 when I'm back. Last I checked, they're not too big on baseball down in Australia and New Zealand. Wink

Good one!

Seriously though, I do enjoy baseball playoffs. The problem is that I work mostly nights and I don't have cable, so I haven't been able to watch any of the games.

Baseball is less of a game really, and more of a mental game of consequence. It's more like chess than most would think. After each development, the amount of possibilities change.

I love sitting in the stands and watching how each small development (runner on, left-handed hitter, full count) changes the strategy dramatically.

It's also great that unlike other sports, where previous events don't always directly affect a scoring play (a bad pass or offside at 3:15 of the third, doesn't affect a succesful scoring rush at 4:10) in baseball, the highlight you see on the news (sac fly, player scores) is simply the consequence of an innings work: The walk, stolen base, single, and sac fly are all equally important in getting that runner across the plate.

It seems our pitching crew is suffering! Smile C'mon, one a you boys is gunna have to suck it up! I'm sure we can get Lance to spring for some Tommy John surgery for the greater good of the Hipbaseball team.

We gotta find a mascot. Maybe Gus the Polar bear from Central park? I've been a mascot before, I'll wear the costume!

Hey hipfan73 lets be a horse. You can be the front though because my Grandma calls me a horses ass everytime I see her. I was born ready for this.

Doh! You just stole my Little League position....although my coach then was never happy when I was yelling for my pitcher to throw a changeup for some strange reason...
