Having covered pro wrestling for a while (yeah, I know... I'll wait for the laughter to die down) one realizes the devestating long-term effects of steroid use.

At least every month (And that's no exageration) we'd be writing an obit for a guy in his 30's or 40's (And sometimes 20's) who looked like an Adonis, only to have died in his sleep due to steroid use. Since 1999, the number is staggering, damn near 40 dead now.

If it was football or basketball, SI would do front page stories on it... hopefully it doesn't require dozens of more deaths in a legit sport before people wake up.

I call it the "cigarette effect." If roids killed you the day after you used them, nobody would touch them (Much like if a tumor developed after one puff, nobody would smoke) But because it takes a while, and the "positive" results are near instant... people's invincibility complex' takes over, and it all seems worth it...

It's not.

Unfortunately, I don't think a lot of the users see it as being not worth it. Too many of these guys think that having the glory in their 20s and 30s is worth the price of death in their 40s. The dangers of 'roids have been well known for quite some time now (how many years ago did Lyle Alzado die?) yet these guys just keep on injecting them.

Caminiti had other issues too - he was a coke addict. One can only imagine the mess his body was in.

When you mix roids with the fast, on the road, lifestyle that many pro athletes enjoy: it's a deadly combo.

Like I said, not many folks think of the consequences, since the immediate pay-off is usually so great.

Hopefully, it doesn't take a bunch of 'em dropping like flies over the next decade to make testing mandatory.

I agree 100 % if it is not the roids it is usually from suicide. I live in Atlanta and for some reason there are quite a few ex wrestlers living here. Also who would have guessed Miss Elizabeth would die at an early age, here only side effect was dealing with Macho Man.

When I was growing up, he was one my favorite baseball players. It sucks, he's gone now. Yea, last few years he decided to give it all up...shame
