In View, the video . . .

Exactly... my shirt right now says Cameroon on it. I'm definetly not in Cameroon... So I'm going to just keep assuming she's still in NY.

But it's not just her shirt. Her shirt is carrying a newspaper's name, and she's trying to sell newspapers. Obviously we're supposed to think she's selling the Shanghai newspaper.

Not that it matters - as Marge Simpson once said, I don't want to start a whole thing with this - but I'm sticking with my she's-overseas theory for two reasons.

1) I don't believe they'd be so sloppy as to pull a Plan 9 and screw up the time of day (nor does the video give any hint that it's some sort of metaphor).
2) There is no Shanghai Herald Tribune (at least, there is not a single reference to it online), which leads me to believe they had the shirt printed off solely for the video.

If you don't agree with my intrepretation, you're not a true fan.

Cheers,
John

P.S. I've been wrong before.

Maybe it's a big metaphor signifying that Times Square and Chinatown are "worlds apart" even if they're both in New York, i.e. they're like "night and day". Throw in some poetic license for good measure.

Or, maybe someone should play the video backwards and see what it says.

Nice disclaimer btw. Would be a good signature.

Completely agree with your interpretation, especially with your first point -- I can't see them screwing that up unless it was done on purpose.

I definitely think she's overseas... why would he be longing for her that bad if she was in the same city?

If we didn't know that the video shoot was in New York City, would we assume either of them are there?

I think she is in NY.

From what I can tell she's wearing a shirt that says Shanghai herald tribune. I guess it stands to reason that it is part of the International Herald Tribune owned by the new york times.

Makes sense. Gord is in asia, she's half a world away (business trip maybe?) - he can't get in touch with her.

The video restores my faith that the Hip haven't completely lost their minds. The 'cuts' are the best part of it - they're the curveball that perversely chops up a song apparently designed to be their 'accessible bubble-gum pop single' - a neatly whacked-out touch. (A shortened version might avoid the cuts, but that would result in just another banal video).

ok i haven't read all the posts (dunno if this was posted) but i've just now been able to see the video and that cut seen where gord is playing his guitar he says:
"if i ask you a question are you gonna lie to me? was that your question, cuase that one was easy"
and when i heard the first couple words i knew the rest right off! then htinking i rememberred it from the show here in moncton last year opening for the stones sept 3 05. the first song is grace, too and gord sings the above quote just before "he said i'm TRAGICALLY HIP! Come on just let's go!"

*edit* i just noticed that in the video he doesn't say "cause that one was easy" (from the end of the quote above) but that IS the next line according to what he said at the concert.

They started their set off with Grace, Too...
It began: "If I ask you a question, are ya gonna lie to me? Is that your question? Cuz that one was eaaaaaaassyyy"

Any instances of Pretend heard before that?

Hahah just kiddin with ya buddy Big Grin

But yeah I noticed the same thing when I listened to it the other day. I feel like i've heard it elsewhere besides Moncton, but I don't recall actually hearing any full versions of Pretend anywhere....

It's just standard backwards masking stuff - smoke pot, worship Satan, stuff like that.
