San Franciscan Hipsters
#1

I'm a long-time fan relocated to the Bay Area from northern Washington State. I do my best to expand the horizons of the few around me I feel that deserve some good 'ole Canadian rock and roll imports.

Are there many here in the Bay Area know the Hip and use this site? If so, I would love to know how they were introduced and any thoughts on the upcoming October show.

Also, are there good places to discuss lyrics and various interpretations of them here or elsewhere? I'm always fascinated by Gord's lyrics and willing to discuss.....I mean it can be difficult being an American and knowing the Canadian culture that well....I knew what a "Toonie" was, but I certainly had to Google "Busker"!

Cheers to you all, I haven't been this excited about a concert since the last time they were at the Fillmore. It was nice to be able to bump into Gord and Paul on the street, safe in their anonymity in San Francisco.

PS -Please excuse the crappy BW scan, but does anyone else out there have this piece handed out at the October 2002 Fillmore show?

Hello and welcome to the board! Always good to have somebody down that way who can spread the good word...

Did you happen to see the band/have you heard the Sausolito radio show bootleg? One of the best semi-acoustic shows the Hip have ever done. I don't know that Sausolito is near you, but somebody told me it was near San Fran...

Grooveless!

I am actually "working" right now, in Sausalito. FYI - It's the first stop north of the Golden Gate Bridge coming from San Francisco. I have never heard of such a track....very curious. There aren't any radio stations, per se, in Sausalito so I'm dying to know more. What can you tell me? A link perhaps?

More importantly, I have NEVER heard a Hip song on the radio in the 5 years I've been here now!

There is a VERY famous recording studio here, called "THE RECORD PLANT"....and I have to wonder if it was recorded there.....?

I know the reference, of course, but what do you think "Horrible Esthete
" is in reference to?

I always thought it might be a reference to someone with a touch of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder...?

Yes, it was recorded there...the bootleg I have doesn't say Power Plant, it just says Planet Studios (I guess they spelled it wrong if, as you say, it's actually "Plant") but it's a seven song soundboard set with great between song banter...good stuff.

Here is the link:

Welcome! I once saw the Hip in '98 at a small outdoor festival near Novato (just north of San Francisco). Amazing show. Perhaps you were there?? I've heard nothing but great things about the atmosphere at the Fillmore. I'm sure it'll be a fantastic gig on Oct. 7th!
