I'll second the Sadies for opener. I got to see them open for Blue Rodeo and was very impressed. My cousin left the Rider game (46 good guys - 16 pathetic clowns) in time to see the last 6 songs the Sadies played. He said Tiger Tiger was real good.

How about Matt Mays? I STILL have not seen him (pathetic for a Haligonian) because I'm never free when he plays...but I love his album and I have hear nothing but high praise for his rocking live show!

Yeah, I saw him and he had a few really good songs, and it was definitely energetic, but IMHO his music can't hold a candle to Matt. And hometown pride has nothing to do with it! Yours is one more solid endorsement and so I absolutely must go see him next time he shows up at the Marquee!

I think because Matt's music is charged but more mellow; it makes you want to think about it. It makes your heart want to beat in time with the groove and rhythm. It satisfies the brain as well as the ears. Sam Roberts is drinking music...it's loud, in-your-face and since Sam can't sing live it doesn't matter if you can or not, bellow along with him. It's good guitar music, but from a pop culture standpoint, it's just the kind of nouveau-hippie rock'n'roll that college kids love.

Yes that's so true! I really hope to see Matt make it someday! He sure deserves it!
I have seen Sam 3 times! really not by choice and I really wasn't to impressed. But yeah he really can't sing live at all. I guess it's one of those things where music that has substance has a hard time making it.

Wow, lots of Sam Roberts bashing goin' on in here. I completely disagree with you guys. I love Sammy. I love his music, I love his lyrics, and honestly, how can you not love the beard! Are you perhaps judging him based solely on the radio singles? Try listening to the entire album. Songs like Taj Mahal, Every Part of Me, and Higher Learning show that there's much more to Sam Roberts than in-yer-face beer drinking music. Like him or not, his music is better than 90% of the crap you hear on the radio these days. Just be thankful that radio and Muchcrap are playing something a little different for a change. Sammy is gonna be around for a long time. Mark my words.
As for Matt Mays, I totally agree. He's a fantastic songwriter and I hope to hear more from him in the future. I saw him open for Sam as well and if we're gonna compare live shows, I'd say they were both even.

Well yeah, Sam isn't ALL bad. I for one like about half of Born In a Flame. But I think about Matt in contrast to Sam the way I think about Blue Rodeo in contrast to AC/DC...or The Hip in contrast to Aerosmith.
I guess the real deal-breaker for me was Sam's live show. I was very disappointed. He flails around the stage spitting sweat like a true rock'n'roller, and his songs are certainly loud enough...but I didn't feel anything. i didn't derive any sense of artistic license from his live show, it just seemed to be a drunkard's utopia.
However, like I said, I can't disagree with you ENTIRELY because it IS good to see popular culture embracing a real musician, and a Canuck to boot!
