What's the American word?

Total Population of California, October 2003: 35.5 million
Total Population of Canada, October 2003: 31,752,842

That always puts it in perspective for me.
More people in California than all of Canada.

2004 government census numbers have us at just over 36 million, independent research at 32 million. Either way, you're right, we're a vastly dispersed and diverse nation. At one point in the 40's (Before post war immigration) there were more people in New York City than in this whole country. And as you know, nobody rocks per capita like us.

Horrible Esthete ~ I must thank you for your research. I lack the attention span to do something like that. I tried looking up populations and stuff but just quit when I couldn't find the info I was looking for.

The Horrible Esthete Wrote:My only guess is that people of a particular ideology tend to embrace the things, including art, that embody the characteristics of that ideology. The Hip are distinctly Canadian, and their material intertwines a great deal of Canadian lore, culture, geography, and experience. The familiarity of content cultivates interest, and a surge in interest breeds pride.

I think this basically sums up the issue. You actually own this thread now.

The point I was actually confounded by is people here were bent on the idea that the Hip were more known to Canadians and not Americans, I wondered if they actually were. Maybe the reason is the amount of ticket sales or album sales or large venues being packed in Canada but not America, I don't really know. But the whole patriotism and pride issue is also covered here much like you brought it up. Awhile ago, people were posting here their disgust for people at Hip concerts being draped in Canadian flags and that story of the guy waving the Canadian flag and Gord told him to put it away (couldn't tell you when it happened) and the guy got all pissed off at Gord. From the looks of it, the Hip don't neccessarily want to be considered cultural icons. I mean, they wouldn't mind but maybe they're just about the music? Probably. But it just seems that people endorse the idea that the Hip are 'Canada's Best Kept Secret' and what-not. It is something interesting to ponder though. I think it's just what you said though, a mix of pride and familiarity for Canadian culture.

That probably won't be true for much longer, though - with so many Americans planning on moving to Canada. Wink

He wanted a job working for CHOM, it was a childhood dream of his and unless he was a Canadian he didn't really stand a chance.
