I wouldn't be one bit surprised if in the future The Trews end up opening for the Hip.

Well, it looks like there is at least one other person who found the Trews great live!
Brazle, I understand that people can be influenced by the media. Hey, I pointed out recently that I think a lot of people are into Sam Roberts because they toured with the Hip. I agree with you on that point. Saying that though, that's not the reason why I like the Trews. I like them because I saw them twice here on PEI live and both times they were amazing. I saw that topic "Trews vs. The Hip" on their message board and just laughed at it. I got a kick out of the fans who said that The Trews kick the Hip's ass and are head and shoulders above the Hip. If it weren't for the Hip and other bands like the Stones, AC/DC, and Zeppelin the Trews wouldn't have gotten any ideas for making music! I just don't want to be lumped into the category of liking something because someone else tells me it's good. I do have a mind of my own. Sure, I like bands/artists that are connected with the Hip and so does everyone here it seems. I like Sarah Harmer, some of the Watchmen stuff. I like them because of THEIR own music.
BTW, a Trews/Hip show here in the Maritimes, I'M THERE! That'd be a fantastic show.

I saw the Trews back when they were called Trouser; they opened for Big Sugar at A.J.'s Hangar in Kingston, and totally and utterly blew the headliners off the stage. I remember walking in to a cover of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", and I was an instant convert. These guys put on a fantastic live show, their songs are awesome and their collective talent is impressive. Seen 'em two or three times since then and they keep on improving. Great opening for the Hip imo.

Don't get me wrong, I'll elaborate my point... I don't neccessarily hate the Trews, I see music in black and white; if I like a band, they're good. All other bands that don't neccessarily appeal to me, I consider in that other category. For me, there is no grey area. That being said, I should retract my former statement of saying The Trews sucked. They don't neccessarily suck, they just didn't appeal to me. One reason I am a Hip fan is because there is NOTHIN out there like them but to have everybody saying that the Trews were the next Hip turned me off from the beginning. I had heard of them from before I had heard the "Next Hip" gimmick but I was not partial to a drug reference in a band's first song. In my opinion that was weak. Then the song got entirely too much airplay and they themselves remind me too much of Sloan for some reason. I never liked Sloan either except for a few songs or something. I guess it's a bunch of little things that added up to form my opinion on them. I just seem to hate alot of the new stuff that been coming out, it all sounds the same. They all look the same, messy hair and stubble. Maybe I need to see them live or something?

I think that if people are judging the trews solely on the basis of that one single, they are selling them short.
As for being compared to the Hip, it's usually best to just ignore what the media says about them instead of condemning or praising bands for their press. It would be silly for REM fans to hate the hip because of the comparisons they get with REM.
The trews are a great live act, but I'm pretty sure big sugar can still take em any day of the week. If they were around that is...

Haven't had the pleasure of seeing Big Sugar live. I've heard good things though. I guess I'll never know now.
All I know is I haven't seen too many big name bands live. Of the live shows I've been to The Hip, The Trews, Live, Hayden, and Wide Mouth Mason were all good to amazing. Granted, the Wide Mouth shows were small venue as was the Hayden show but they were still very good shows. Oh, almost forgot about Sarah Harmer. Her and her band sounded flawless and her voice is as beautiful as ever live. Saw her in a 500-600 seat theatre on PEI. GOOD STUFF!
