The first 2 hip albums I bought were TATHH and DFN the day that Henhouse dropped. What a great day that turned out to be. A buddy had played Pigeon Camera for me and I decided this was a band I needed to check out. Henhouse is the 2nd best hip album in my opinion. How can anybody not love Apartment song. Beyond me. Flamenco, Lets stay engaged, ABAC, c'mon thats all amazing stuff. Giftshop is my all time favorite song live. The begining of that song is designed to kick your ass live. A little off topic but I sure am tired of the bad rap IVL and M@W get. Every review I read talks states how great it is to have a good album after such lackluster ones. GET BENT! If you actually listen to these albums more than once (every great album taked a couple of listens to get) you find some amazing stuff. How bout M@W, Puttin Down, Sharks, The Bear and try to end an album better than Dire Wolf into Dark Canuck.

A good collection of tunes but the record doesn't 'cohere' and I gotta say this: 'Sherpa' may be THE most boring Hip song. Uninspired melody, inferior lyrics by Gord's standards  ...all that salvages it is the pungent odour of dope running through it and Bobby's spacey guitar work. I remember them playing that at 'Edenfest' and holy crap, it just about sunk the whole gig.

'Daddy' is too 'studio' for me, with its meandering, unfocused melody and slightly wobbly hook. Even 'Vienna' and 'Gift Shop' elude me as real high-water marks. I just don't see what the big deal is with those tunes. But for those who like 'Apartment Song.' 700-Ft. Flamenco, ABAC (of course), 'Put It Off,' I'm with you. And add, maybe, 'Engaged,' although that tune doesn't change enough to get really interesting That's about it.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned, though: their experiments on Henhouse allowed them to 'branch' out and add that dimension of poppy melodicism to their work that makes such a difference on PP and IBE. So it's an important transitional moment in their career. But as a record, it's probably their weakest effort until M@W.

Trouble at the Henhouse is my favourite album.

It's just the perfect album. Gift shop is the perfect opener. Put it Off is the perfect closer.

I can't even talk about it, because henhouse is what I compare other albums to, in order to gauge how great they are. It just has such a continuous feel and groove to it (with the exception of ABAC).

Flamenco is in my top 5.

I'm surprised by how diverse the opinion is on which song is weakest on TATH. I wonder if it's because the album's overall slow pace causes a lot of people's interest to flag at some point. Mine happens at Apartment Song, which is why I have an antipathy for the song. With others, maybe they run out of gas at Flamenco, or Sherpa. I wonder, too, if CC was a stronger song, would it give people a burst of stamina to make it through the Engaged/Sherpa/Off stretch at the end?

Trouble is the best work the band has ever done IMO. I've listed reasons why in a few of the ongoing threads around here, most of 'em pretty lucid.

Trouble has, and is, everything.

I was just listening to the album again and a thought occured to me that did a few days ago as well.
I love how the instruments really work together on this record. The two guitars are a real team. There isn't a rythm and lead but they work right together and the bass too. it's like a symphony. So interesting to listen to. I love that about TATH.

Coconut Cream is one of the best hip songs there is...TATHH is a masterpiece, i prefer it to M@W, Road Apples, Up To Here, s/t, and IVL easily, i think i might even like it better than Phantom Power too, i dunno, it's close, that's for sure.

TATH is stronger than the last THREE albums, IMO, and I also like it more than UTH. I love the Apartment Song (as if my sig didn't give that away), and I think Sherpa is one of the best songs this band has ever recorded. If Coconut Cream  and 700 ft. Ceiling  were replaced by ANY other two Hip tunes, this album could easily be my favorite.

I actually just reordered TATH to replace my old worn out copy. I love Apartment Song and Let's Stay Engaged. But I gotta tell you, I saw probably the only live version of Coconut Cream and it was just horrible.
The whole crowd just stopped moving. Amazingly bad from a great live band.

How could you want to replace the two hardest rocking tunes on TATH? WTF? It'd be really weak without 700 ft. Ceiling and Coconut Cream IMO.

We all have opinions, Canuck. "Hardest rocking" doesn't have a damn thing to do with quality in MY mind. If I wanna "rock out", I make a selection from my extensive catalogue of AC/DC. When I want brilliantly written songs, laiden with sublime texture and mood, I pop in Trouble at the Henhouse, and omit Coconut Crap and 700-foot Sewer from the playlist.

tisk tisk, that's a shame, because NOBODY, and i mean NOBODY rock out like the hip, they might not be the hardest rockin' band out there, but they have the most unique style of rockin' out that has ever been rocked out, it's like a really loud and ferocious wet dream when they turn it up and go all out (think Coconut Cream, At The Haart Of The Melt, Fire In The Hole, Fully Completely, Save The Planet, All Tore Up, Little Bones, Freak Turbulence, ect. ect. ect.).

For pretty much anyone who got into the Hip during their first 4 albums, Henhouse was a huge dissapointment.
