I was just listening to the hip in S'toon back in 91. What an awesome show. I got this from Rory back in the day. I know Rory's collection has changed hands and it is now next to impossible to get any of those old gems that were in Rory's collection. Rory was very quickly approaching 500 boots and had many many old shows that he was willing to trade, b&p or whatever. The shows from before 96 are getting very hard to find. I just wonder why people even bother taping shows if not to spread the music we all live for around. I've met a few tapers in my travels and getting boots out of some of these guys is like pulling teeth. I won't name names but I can if needed, you know who you are. Others are awesome (thanks Gus for gettin the edmonton show out so soon!!) I am very proud of the shows I've taped and am willing to share with who ever asks me for them. I usually try and throw in a couple of extra discs cause let's face it they are only a few cents each and the pleasure you get from the boots is priceless. Spreading hip boots around is second only to a hip show. It's the tunes that brought us all to this site to begin with. Let's keep the music free and available to any who ask.

Spreading boots is second to many things, including something you must've forgot about: LIFE! Do you seriously think people have time to solely spread boots because people like you want them right away? You speak of how glorious Rory was (no argument here) but did you figure out why he gave up his collection? LIFE you nimrod. Try getting one.

People like you who think they are owed something are what's bringing this hobby down, and posting nonsense like you have only makes it worse. Nobody owes anybody anything in this world, let alone this community. Just because boots exist doesn't mean that everybody is entitled to them, hell, it doesn't even entitle you to ANY of them.

I'll let everyone around here decide if they want your attitude and actions to be representative of the whole. And if you come near my goddamn mics with anything, I'll knock yer fucking block off before I make sure you get thrown out on your head by the Hip's road crew, let alone venue security. You must be related to that asshole from Vancouver who thought he could steal Gord's guitar pedal, eh? Given how taper friendly this band is, going around with wire cutters at one of their shows will illicit the same reaction from the road crew that asshole did.

BTW, it's the love of the Hip that brought us here, not trading bootlegs. If that is your main thrust, I suggest finding some peer-to-peer network like Kazaa, they will be more symathetic to your plight. The music will remain free; it will be people like you who ruin it for everyone else.

If Lance simply went to his log files and found the IP of the computer that posted this message and compared it to the IP of another user of the hipbase I'm sure you'll be able expose this "unfriendly taper" coward.

Hey Hip, those weren't my videos. That was the work of CanuckCourage here on the Hipbase, or his brother, from the Kelowna show last year. He's a great guy and saved me by posting those clips (my video sucked and my audio crapped out, so he was able to help many diehards by posting those - thanks again Mark).

Since my name is in the title of this thread, I suppose I should weigh in on the topic.
I started collecting Hip shows on cassette tape back in November of 1996. Thanks to Trevor AStrope, my addiction was born. My collection really started to snowball with the Phantom Power tour, and from 1998 through to 2002 solid, I was burning and trading roughly 10-20 shows every single week. And I loved every minute of it. It was exhausting, time consuming, and didn't make a heck of a lot of sense to people, but I knew that spreading the music was my "duty" as a Hip fan, of sorts. I had the resources, I had the shows, and I had the website. So why not? I didn't do it for the recognition or because I had links on the Hip's website or because the band themselves got a show from me that they were missing in their collection. I did it because I was making countless Hip fans all around the world, happy. The feeling of getting my first ever live Tragically Hip concert on tape (11/10/94 Boston) is, to this day, still fresh in my heart, and I knew that by trading these shows or doing B&P's, I could make someone else feel the same way. THAT is why I did it. Nowadays, I see that most of the shows can be downloaded, so that feeling of going to the mailbox and finsing a new Hip tape or CD is non-existent for most folks, and that's cool. Technology is progress, I suppose, and why not make it as easy as possible to spread the music? This technology, coupled with the fact that I met the woman of my dreams, took away from my desire to continue full-throttle, the spreading of the music. I haven't updated my website since I met her, and now we have a beautiful baby girl. This is now my life, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Trading boots, and ONLY trading boots, was my life for a good part of five years. Everyone must move on, and I am no different. I am no less a Hip fan than I was 10 years ago. I am digging the new album, and will try to see as many shows as I can this year, time and family permitting.
My collection went to another Hip fan that we all know, and may I say, the biggest and most dedicated Hip fan of them all. It took me awhile to get my entire collection out to him, and he was so patient with me, that I can't thank him enough for that. I still have a few shows left in my collection, some favorites, and I will probably go nuts in 2004 trying to get every new show again. But I'll never get to the same point that I was, trading and burning every hour of every day. Life hit me like a freight train, and I'm still hanging on for the ride....

I remember moving away to Sudbury to go to University just before the Phantom Power tour and those packages that I received from Rory with great music to spread around made life so much better.
But he is right, the days of "if a song can't save us now than nothing can" quickly become " If I don't pay the bills we all live in a van"

rory helped me out with my first hip show about a year ago, he was so nice to me i was just starting out and screwed up my b&p package and somehow didn't put return postage on it. he was nice enough to cover it for me and gave me a very friendly reminder of how to do a b&p properly. in that small experience he was great, and it sounds as though he's been great to so many others. i'm glad to hear he is living a very fulfilling life.

TLB maybe you should reread what I wrote. I said it was the love of the music that brought us here. The only music that should be free is the boots!!

Let's get a few things straight here. Mark you are the only coward on this site. You hoard your boots. you rarely post except to tell everyone how many shows you've been to and how you video taped 55 shows from the IVL tour. Thats right folks if you saw the hip during the IVL tour in north america Mark has a video tape of it. To my knowledge none of these have been shared. My brother has been trying to get one of them since the tour was over.

My name is William but most people call be billy. My older brother is bauer (Jody) who has been on this forum for a while and his trading practices speak volumes. I think some of you met him and his wife at the secret shows, He may have even invited some of you to stay at their home when the tour starts. He has three passions in life and first TLB would be his family and if you've seen him with his wife you would understand. The second is music, be it the dead or the hip he breaths it. The last as some of you may know from the big bert discussions is hockey. Many of the tussels he has been in over the years on the ice is a direct result of me shooting my mouth off, which I did on this thread.

I believe that Rory made a huge mistake by giving (selling) his boots to Mark Sloggett. This guy does not trade. My brother has been trying to get one boot from this guy for two years. Even when he is trying to figure out how to fix the shows he has taped Mark won't even respond to the pm. Now you might say that people are too busy, but have you not looked at the bottom of the hipbase home page where it tells you who has been on the site today. When I see certain names down there everyday but they can't respond to a simple two line pm I take it a little personal. This is supposed to be a community right? My bro came back from the shows in Calgary and Edmonton totally pumped about the new album. He taped the shows and I was over there having a few brews when he tried to play it back. He was devistated when they were unlistenable. He was excited about meeting some fellow hipbasers, people as crazy as him for the hip. He is a proud man and took it a little personal when people would not respond to him. He wanted to fix the sound on these shows and spread them around. Really how long does it take to pm someone? If this forum isn't about all things hip then what the hell is it about. There have been several threads started about show taping etc. Why is it so bad to want a boot? I may tape some shows but they don't belong to me solely. I may keep them at my house but anyone who wants one gets one that is all there is to it. CDs are cheap and burning takes minutes. Having a show on cd that you have been to is priceless. Why go through all the trouble of taping if not to share? What good is it having a box full of shows that no one will ever hear?

You are right TLB no one owes me anything but keeping a show to yourself is selfishly uncool, to me it is the same as selling the boot on ebay.

I guess you've forgotten that many shows (pre-IVL) that have been circulated among Hip traders were all taped by me. I've been taping The Hip since 1993 (first show I taped was Amherst, NY). I taped 10 shows in 1995 and all have been circulating (they all are on Rory's list). I taped 10 shows in 1996 and again all are circulating. I taped 5 shows in 1997 and all are circulating. I taped 12 shows in 1998 and all are circulating. I taped 12 shows in 1999 and are all circulating. and you what happened in 2000 ... I stopped trading all together because I simply didn't have time anymore. After that I was able to trade out the special shows (like Montreal 2000), but after that I just got burned out.

I used to have the same enthusiasm as Jody does spreading the shows but when you've taped as much as I have in the past 15 years (I tape a lot more than just the Hip) that enthusiasm begins to wear thin. I now generally only trade with the people I know and trust.

In fact I did give out some of my IVL videos to people that video tape the show themselves. They came up and talked to me. We exchanged e-mails and then videos.

I’ve lent people equipment so they can tape the shows instead of renting equipment. I’ve seen people do hand-held videos one day and then come back the next day with a tripod because they saw me do it that way. I’ve helped people get clearance from security to get their equipment into shows because I happened to have gotten
to know the crew a bit.

As for Rory's collection, everyone had the same opportunity to get it and I told Rory that if he ever wanted it back then he could. I’ve been through the whole time to get rid of the collection myself (I used to have 3500 analog tapes) and I now regret getting rid of them. And I do have every intention of setting up a website to automate the whole sharing tapes thing. Rory was the king of trading and good on him for spreading to the masses. He was and still is a great guy. The same applies to Peter Padjen.

As for the IVL videos I shot, who cares? I certainly don't. I have 500 MiniDVs of footage that are just sitting in a box because you know what I don't really care to watch the stuff. I have better things to than watch a Hip video. I actually have never watched _any_ of my videos. I go to all these Hip concerts because I like their music not because I am able to tape their shows. It just so happens that I enjoy the aspect of filming more than the final product that comes out of it. And if you’re wondering well let someone else do the work for me; I’ve been burned so many times by lending out my masters to people that I just don’t do it anymore. I have had those masters stolen, lost, never given back to me, etc.

I actually never had a problem with Jody and I did tell him why I haven't been able to trade. And if I don't trade with Jody, who cares? Why are you speaking on Jody’s behalf. If we had been able to film the IBE club shows we would have been doing a multi-cam mix. I’m now hesitant to work with Jody now because of you.

So William, I want you for the IBE tour this fall spend approximately $25,000 and follow the Hip and tape every show and put your money where your mouth is and spread all the shows.

BTW I was actually planning to BitTorrent all six Hip shows I've been so far, but now I’m obviously hesitant to do so because of jerks like you.

I have met Mark a couple of times, and he was never anything but nice.
I have even dealt with him on video conversions, and he was great.
Keep on enjoying the music.
Recording is half the fun.
Do whatever you like with it.

Nothing on my list has been downloaded, all through mail trades.
I am sure that will be changing this tour which seems like downloadville.
