102.1 Sucks - The Mod Club
#1

I was at The Mod Club show on the 29th - and it sounded great.
I just downloaded the Mod Club show from the 29th.
And man - does it sound like CRAP.
OK, not what I downloaded, that is probably what it sounded like on the radio.
Listening to the download - I remember now why I do not like The Hip on 102.1.
I do not know why but the mix they do or whatever they do to the audio of the music at 102.1 for normal radio just sucks. Kinda out of balance or like you are missing half of the audio. Almost like you are in a tunnel.
I do not know anything about it, but all the other audio stations out of Canada sound good. Like the CD's.
102.1 does not.
The show sounded pretty damn good live - and 102.1 just killed it.
I hope to god that the Sympatico broadcast is a different audio feed.
Then you guys out of the 102.1 listening area will see what I mean.

I haven't like The Edge since they put up those "No Stones" billboards along the 401. I don't even like the Stones, but I thought that was an unfunny, juvenile, petty, cheap shot at Q107 (who by then, they were already killing in listnership...) and arguably one of the most prolific bands of all time.

Plus I think that Booker clown is a world class tool.

So yeah, I'll join yer 102.1 bashing...

I agree with you on the sound. Songs do tend to sound different on there. But I could never explain why that happens.

As for 102, I feel over the last few years they are not as good. I really enjoyed them in the 97-99 era when the morning show would be humble and fred, May Potts in the midday slot and Alan Cross for the afternoon. But maybe I am just getting old.

Allan Cross is now the PD at Edge, and is doing his bit to turn down the suck. Sandra was Humble and Fred's news girl, and was doing radio in Ottawa last I heard. Mae Potts is on Chum FM, doing weekends I think and other random stuff. Humble and Fred of course champion the Mix 99.9 morning ship.

I agree, 97-99 rocked hard on the Edge. They had a couple of lean years, but its turning the corner I think. Plus Joise Dye has the sexiest voice ever.

Cheers

hey guys -- i put the show up on the FTP and i agree -- it did suck ass on 102.1 -- even when i was listening to it i had second thoughts about uploading -- i was really hoping for someone else like 97.7 or Q107 to air it as well BUT no luck -- soo instead the sound was terrible. hopefully sympatico will change that!!!

fiddlersgreen - Did you convert my recording to MP3, or did you record the show as well?

I think my recording sounds great (although I may be a bit biased Wink )

Josie Dye sounds soooo sexy every afternoon! :thumb:

Edge and Q107 are both owned by Corus Entertainment, so I don't think the billboards were meant as an attack on their own.

Ron.
You were at the show also.
Wasn't the music alot more - in your face.
For lack of a better term.
The guitars, drums and bass just sounded great live - not just because it was loud.
To me they seem to be almost a second thought for the radio show - almost like :
"Let's hear Gord sing and just play some background music, softly"

i couldnt agree with you more. I was at the show and the sound was incredible, but whatever 102.1 did really fucked it up. The mix is shit.

I thought it was more Bookie, and his blatant over-the-top MC'ing...anyone else find the American radio shows they used to do were handled much better?

Edge and Q107 are both owned by Corus Entertainment, so I don't think the billboards were meant as an attack on their own.

The print ads in Marquee and other industry rags said "Who needs your P's and Q's?" with a hot teacher in the photo... so, just like Coke "edging" its own markets against their own products, those ads were certainly aimed at driving listeners from "Your dad's station" with the Stones and Van Halen (Hence the hot teacher I believe...) towards the edge. Not sure if it was to stream line demo's or attack Q before the Corus purchase (This was in '98 IIRC)

hey chris -- i recorded it as well -- BUT even when i listen to 102.1 on a regular day, the sound of the music never sounds like other stations -- its like listening to a mono recording as opposed to stereo with Q107 -- which is strange considering they are the same "family" -- but who knows, maybe the signal strength for 102.1 just isnt as strong in Welland as it might be closer to TO. Don't get me wrong -- the "voice" is great BUT the music is not distinct -- like being in a tunnel!!!

fiddlersgreen, have a listen to my recording and see what you think. Maybe the sound will be different/better and you'll be able to enjoy the show again and again
