All about Gus...
#1

From yesterday's Chartattack (http://www.chartattack.com/damn/2004/06/2910.cfm )...note the bold...

Quote:The Tragically Hip want you to know about the plight of depressed polar bears.

One of the most compelling songs from The Hip's new album, In Between Evolution, is an earnest ode called "Gus: The Polar Bear From Central Park." Gus, for those of you not up on your cults of animal appreciation, is one of the main attractions of the Central Park Zoo in New York. The giant bear was diagnosed with depression and obsessive-compulsive behavior back in '94, largely caused by the fact that tight zoo quarters tend to wreak havoc on the well-being of polar bears used to roaming 25 kilometres per day in the wild.

"Any time you've ever seen any animal in captivity — especially big guys like that — there's a behavior that becomes pretty easy to spot. A dementia is what they call it," says Hip frontman Gord Downie. "They have other names for it. Depression. So that's sort of what we're paying money to go see."

To the Zoo's credit, they paid $25,000 to an animal behaviorist to help find ways to get Gus out of his funk, which resulted in extensive activation programs to help his illness. And a few years ago they gave Gus's quarters a massive expansion as well as providing him with some company in the form of two female companions, Ida and Lily.

All this has made Gus and his girlfriends quite the media stars. In addition to The Hip's sonic salute, numerous news stories have been written about Gus. He's also been the subject of a children's book and a short film as well as inspiring performance art and fringe plays. His own "art" (chunks of log he has scratched up and chewed up rubber balls) will soon be available for sale on eBay.

Downie says the inspiration for the song came from a headline he read in the newspaper during a visit to New York. In the song, Gus is too down to feel like killing anything, which is a symptom of his depression.

"I know for a fact that polar bears, as a rule, and not even as a rule, unequivocally, want to kill anything that moves and eat it," he says. "So there's no sort of, I don't think there's any really taming them, really. And I think it's one of those things where, yeah, if you're up there in the tundra and you're moving around, the only reason it's not going to kill and eat you is because it's already full. There's something about that that's kind of compelling to me.

"And we needn't look much further than our own lives, I guess. I guess you can expand upon those feelings and thoughts as much as you like when you see that. Which I guess is also about what we pay money to see or do."

That is sad....man I HATE zoos. The only time I see a zoo as a 'benefit' for animals is when that species is endangered....even then, I still hate zoos. Species should be left to their own demise without human interaction.. Some species die out while others live on...
As far as education purposes:
If someone wants to learn about animals or see them, there is always the Discovery Channel and the internet. Animals should be left to their own natural habitat. Just my two and half cents.

I saw this over at Henhouse.
In Gus, everytime he says Gus, substitute the word Dubya in there.
Makes sense to me.

Hey, after reading that, I'm up for some good ol' fashioned jail-breaks right about now. Anybody agree? This is an important dilemma. Robbing an animal of its freedom and making a profit off it. I say we get right down guerrilla style and apart from burning them billboards (don't say I'm the only one) we bust Gus out of the zoo along with all other animals in zoos. I got no license and no wheels but I'll WALK if I have to. Anybody wanna join the coalition?

(This post is NOT a joke)

I think once you free Gus, he won't be so troubled anymore, he will have killed and eaten you, and you would have been afraid

I totally fucking hear you Hiwaygirl! Everytime someone pays to go into a Zoo they're promoting the imprisonment of wild animals. :x
My turning point came about 10 years ago after a visit to Marineworld or whatever in Florida. It literally made me cry seeing those pathetically small (and not too clean) conditions and we had to leave after 10 minutes.
Now I spend that money on animal charities that rescue animals from cruel owners, among many others, in an attempt tp redeem my evil self-absorbed zoo-going past.

Your forgetting that Gus, is one of us.

He might think "Yummy Yum Yum's" while looking at another Yankee tourist, but as soon as WE bust him out, he'll dazzle us with his ability to handle a puck, quote Bob and Doug MacKenzie and down Molson's like a Grizzly... The Spirit of 1812 all over again. We're Coming Big Man!

While on the topic... (I guess it's related) Any Suzuki fans here? I got "From Naked Ape To Superspecies" for my 17th birthday (by request) and have read it religiously since then (about 4 yrs ago). I wash my garbage. I reuse milk-bags. My whole family hates me for it. Any other environmental-savvy hipbasers out there?

Makes me think of Adrian Belew's song from 'Lone Rhino';

'The Lone Rhinoceros'

I'm a lone rhinoceros
there ain't one hell of a lots of us
left in this world

I stand alone in my concrete cell
where people stare and toss me Coke cans
I guess it's better than being poached
but I'd give my horn just to see my homeland

I'm a lone rhinoceros
there ain't one hell of a lots of us
left in this world

They say I am ugly,
call me a beast
I hear them snicker
when I'm half asleep
Is beauty such a big commodity
I always heard it was only so deep

I'm a lone rhinoceros
there ain't one hell of a lots of us
left in this world

I know the zoos protect my species
they give me food, collect my feces
but I can't help it, I miss the past
I'll never again see my good old mudbath
