As for Gord's nautical obsession...

Ever been to Kingston? It'd be hard to grow up there and not be influenced by nautical and sea-going expereinces. Gord's had a thing for Whales, the sea, and the men who try to conquer her, forever.

I'd suggest growing up on the banks of the Lake (Especially Odessa, Gord's hometown just outside Kingston) gives a guy lots of sea inspiration. And remember he also studied Canadian history, and enjoys Canadian poetry. Alistair McLeod's maritime poems are legendary as are the many, many links to Canada, her birth, and the sea.

Ah, but water runs through it, and you can hike from Odessa through the "bush" and straight to the lake. Trust me, I've got the poison ivy scars to prove it!

It really is a great spot. When you're a kid, you've got nature, the lake and tons of local points of interest, like the fort and the jails. When you're a teen or a student, you've got a vibrant downtown, the university scene and as Paul said the other night: a decent bucnh of clubs and bars. And when you're an ancient 20-something like me, you can still hang out and stare at university girls like a lecherous old man. Can't beat Kingston.
