I do buy all my albums. I have downloaded the odd track to check out a band, but if I enjoy it I buy the album, if I don't like it I delete it. I really don't have a problem with people dowloading some music, but I have enough friends that have download entire discographies, video games, movies, etc., that its started to get on my nerves more than it should. Sorry if I come across as a bit of an asshole, but I'm trying to become a professional writer, and it's a little scary trying to picture what it would be like to lose half my revenue to people downloading my work while I'm trying to pay the bills and put food on the table.

The music industry is changing. It will never be the same again and I think it's a good thing.

To me, being able to share music over the internet is just a more effecient form of the mix tape or cd. When P2P first started up years ago I used to use programs like Napster to find hard to find songs from my favorite artists, artist that I already owned cds from. That inevitebly led to downloading a few songs from artists I wasn't familiar with, which has sometimes led to me buying a cd or going to thier concert or whatever.

I never really took it any further than downloading a few songs over p2p networks until a couple years ago when I started getting into torrents. Torrents have made it easy for me to download entire albums of high quality sound files very quickly. Most of the time I'll use torrents to dowload an album from an artist that I'm interested in finding out more about. If I find I really love an album I've downloaded I'll want to go out and buy it. More often I end up liking an artist from a download and then in the future when they release something I'll buy the album instead of downloading it or go to their concert when they're touring. Lots of times I find I never listen to an album I've downloaded after a few listens and I just delete it. Lately I've downloaded some torrents that have leaked before the cd is released. I do this for bands that I can't wait to hear the new cd and pretty much always go out and get the cd the day it's released.

I don't know where I'm going with all of this really but I do think that we're on the cusp of a big change in the music industry. The current system is fattening the wallets of big corrporations that are jsut after the next big radio hit and it results in more radio drival being created because it sells to the masses while the real talented artists are left off to the side with little marketing help because they don't bring the big volume sales that the top 40 hit makers bring in. Just look at bands like Arcade Fire for an idea on what the internet can do for you. An unheard of indie band catches some popularity on some forums on the net and before you know it they're selling out concerts all over the world. Never would have happened via traditional radio routes.

Basically, because of the internet and sharing music easily over it I have expanded my musical horizons ten fold. I've discovered new bands that I now go out and see in concert whenever possible and I would say that my cd buying has gone up by a real lot. No longer am I at the mercy of the radio to discover new music. I can use sites like www.last.fm
www.allmusic.com
www.pandora.com
and any number of music forums like this to find stuff that I'm really interested in.

honestly....

But you do know what a rhetorical question is, right?

Was that a rhetorical question? Is this?

How 'bout this one: how do you tell "cheap people" from "thieves?"

heh... I might just end up stealing this album after all. I joined thier fan club back when a Calgary stop was announced on thier tour so I could have the chance to get some good seats to the show. Today the presale started which worked great and all but I find out that they're charging $72 a ticket!!!! WTF? Plus the presale goes through ticketmaster and they rape you for another $10.50. I still bought tickets but I don't really feel that great about it. I'll probably end up spending another $15 on Tuesday to get the actual album cause I'm a bit of a completist that way but shit.... $82 for a ticket?

Meanwhile Flea's worried he's loosing out on a few lost record sales from an internet leak.

At least it looks like someone tried to school him up with a bit of reality. Here's a quote from today's Fleamail:

"after the other morning when i found out our record had leaked
i freaked
it leaked i freaked
after calming down a little bit
and finding out more about what actually happens
it has been bought to my attention by some intelligent people
that most of the people who down load the record before it comes out
are people who really love our music and believe in what we do
and they go out and get the real thing anyway
but of course they can not wait to hear it
and are willing to hear a substandard version first
because they are excited to hear it
and of course i understand and i would do the same thing
it just really scared me that people would be hearing something
without the depth of sound that we strive for "

This reminds me of another band, "Harvey Danger" (anyone heard?) Their first album, "Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone?" was absolutely phenomenal. The next two were mediocre, but their third album, "Little By Little" was released for free download via their website. Their rationale was that they felt once people heard it, they would buy it. I thought that was really interesting, I bought it. I'm going to go check how that worked out for them.

Rhetorical question, again. You're not very bright, are you?

That was another rhetorical question, by the way.

It's all bitching and moaning. These guys are f&&ing millionaires. Get a grip and stop crying. I've read articles where Neil Young has said he isn't against people downloading and he doesn't worry because he's a rich man anyway and why should he worry about extra millions? The record companies are shafting the consumer and the bands (ie RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS, U2, many others) are charging ridiculously high prices for concerts. Maybe if Fleabag and his bandmates didn't charge so damn much for their concerts and merchandise, people would be more willing to buy their shit.

brown eyed girl, I have downloaded albums without paying for them. I don't feel any guilt over it. If a band wants to be reasonable and treat their fans well I'm more inclined to buy their stuff. U2 are such filty rich bastards that, although I like some of their music, I have no problem getting it for free.
