Meeting The Hip Stories...
#16

I've met both Paul and Johnny on seperate occasions in good ol' Kingston town. Just recently though, I mean I've lived almost 18 years there and have never once seen them, except for passing Bobby on Clergy Street once. I met Paul at the Grizz one night; I saw him standing in a corner sort of surrounded by cougars and I was like, "shit, that's Paul Langois!" We were just leaving and he looked a little occupied and I was kinda bummed, but my buddies had to wait for their jackets at coat check, so I stood around waiting for them. Then Paul came walking down the front stairs. I felt kinda bad for stopping him after what I just saw, but I was drunk myself and I thought I'd never have this opportunity again (I'm now living in Scotland). I'll never forget (though I probably forget what an ass I might have made out of myself!), but I was like "Man, The Tragically Hip! Sorry to bother you, but I just wanted to shake your hand (and I did thusly) blah-di-blah-di-blah," and not surprisingly (because of my state of inebriation) I can't recall a single word that he said, except that he had a pretty calm voice, very relaxed sound.
A few weeks later, I was at the Scherzo, which turned out to be a pretty wierd night, well, not so much wierd as coincidental, or something... heh heh heh! I was watching Grand Theft Bus, a kick-ass jamband from the East Coast (check them out at jamhub.ca), and at first I discovered that the drummer and bassist from Our Lady Peace were at a table across from the bar. Dunno why, I didn't recall that there was a show anywhere nearby, but I thought that was fine. Didn't speak to them cuz I'm not really a fan anymore, but later on Johnny himself came into the bar and sort of stood in the middle of the room watching Grand Theft Bus. So I did the same "Wow, the Tragically Hip!" schtik, and I shook his hand, despite the advice given in a post above here, unbeknownst to me. He asked if I went to Queen's, and I denied, but I was actually working at the Campus Bookstore at the time. I asked if they had any tunes for any upcoming album to which he replied that they were going to do some recording in the early spring this year. But then he said that they had just sacked their manager and "we'll see if we're still a band in the near future." "Jeezus, don't say that!" I said, and there was a small break in the 'conversation', so I asked him what he thought of Grand Theft Bus, but he was distracted by a buddy of his I guess, and I left. But that was pretty wild.
