Lost In Translation
#1

I just saw this movie yesterday and loved it. My favorite movie since Fargo. The role was written for Bill Murray and I can't see anyone else pulling it off but him. The camerawork was superb. It's unfortunate that it didn't win Picture Of The Year last year but that LOTR machine is hard to beat!

That's exactly what I said the first time I saw it! The Fargo comparison, that is. Bill Murray got ROBBED of the best actor oscar by that melodramatic overactor Sean Penn. This was one of the most powerfully and profoundly subtle acting roles ever undertaken, and Murray nailed it. I thought it was one of the most beautiful movies ever.

There's plenty of melodramatic overactors in Hollywood but I don't think Sean Penn is one of them. Can't wait to see Lost In Translation though. :thumb:

I thought the movie sucked. melodrama? boring. This movie could have been much better. I wonder how much the director's pop had to do with the hype around this movie. He made some good films in his day.

I think Sean Penn is very melodramatic. Dead Man Walking, Mystic River...he's not known for his subtleties. Mystic River, for which he won the award, involved a lot of writhing and screaming of the "Don't take my childrennnn!!" variety. I was nonplussed. Anyone can do that, but Bill Murray was just about the only actor I've seen in years who so perfectly fit a role like a glove and won me over for his realism. I mean, I can respect that you feel Sean Penn is a good actor - we all have different opinions about art, after all, that's the beauty of art - I just don't share such views.

i agree. the movie had absolutely no story. i didn't see any real acting from bill murray. his character didn't do anything. he got up in the morning, did a commercial, drank at the bar, partied at night. woohoo.

i can see why the academy loved it tho. they really enjoy artsy movies like this.

Lost in Translation is certainly one of the best pictures i saw. Ever since i saw Virgin Suicides i am a big fan of Sofie Coppola. In Lost in Translation she makes emotions so pure, but in a way that you don't see in other movies, she's got her own style of filming. Of course the acting of the two main characters translate her ideas to the screen and in my opinion they do it terrific. The simplicity of the story is so beautifully shot and told that for me the awards are just a formality.
Personaly I think Sean Penn is a great actor and artist (maybe one of the best) and deserves an award and deserves the recognition by giving him an oscar, but Bill decerves it aswell (but i think he won't get any change in the future).
For me the awards from the filmfestivals say more than an oscar, because of the quality of the other movies Lost in Translation has to compete with in filmfestivals. I have always a strange feeling about the oscars, the nominees and the winners. In my opnion the mis out a lot of great work at the oscars by looking at the big commercial movies. If you look at the list Lost in Translation has won in filmfestivals, than you see a lot of awards and nominations that give the movies its recognition that it deserves.
