I don't understand how people can NOT get blue faced and pissed off over that...
You make it sound as though americans should just kick back and relax, and accept all kinds of political screw ups because thats the way politics works, and it would be too complicated to do anything about it. Thats nonsense.

I don't think this issue in particular has anything to do with Bush or the war in Iraq, but more to do with how federal government is wasteful, incompetent to an extent and slothful. I have no idea how the people of the Netherlands react to wasteful government spending, but here in the US, when the economy is strong and lots of revenue is pouring into government coffers, nobody gives a crap about how badly the taxpayers money is being mishandled. Here in Wisconsin we've had a huge debate over a 32 billion dollar deficit that was caused by both political parties agreeing on a budget that was wasteful and relying on the economy continuing to be strong. Well guess what, the economy went into the crapper and all of a sudden the politicians are blaming each others' party for too much government spending when they were both responsible in the first place. My point is, when good times are here, the average citizen is going to be more concerned with money being spent on their issues and politicians falling all over themselves to satisify "the will of the people". Personally, I think some of the Taxpayer Rights groups here are a bit nuts because they hate taxes anyway and dont want their money being spent on social spending like welfare, corporate tax breaks, etc. But they have a point where the level of total taxation on citizens is getting to the point where most of our hard earned money is going to pay local, state and federal taxes.

I agree with you that when times are tough people who normally would have kept their mouth shut, start talking. It's only logical because it affects them more directly; increased taxes, cuts on government spending/subsidies..all of that is bad news for the public.
But saying there's no link between issues such as Bush, the war in Iraq and wasteful spending is wrong. You have any idea how much money that war cost? Bush doesn't seem to care. He's been on a spending spree ever since he became president and he's not stopping yet. $5 billion extra for NASA so americans can go to the moon... ..like that's what the country needs right now. But hey, if thats what it takes to give him an extra 4 years in the White House, why not? Screw providing healthcare, and screw the $1 trillion budget deficit..cause those things aren't important. Confusedcratch:

Over here, we dislike wasteful spending just as much as the next person. Our economy isn't doing well either and politicians are blaming each other, same as in the US. But the difference is that the leading politicians here genuinely make me feel as though they're at least trying to act in the best interest of the country. Bush never has and never will make me feel that way.

Unfortunately they have no relation to this current discussion. Although both discussions entail standing up for what you believe in, they are both completely different. Women's and African American's (or any race/gender/minority) rights are akin to basic human rights. A money conscience government is NOT a basic human right such as voting/freedom from slavery. The government as we know it is far to powerful to take on for issues like this.

A government shouldn't have an identity of its own, its there to serve and represent the public and has everything to do with human rights. Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human rights reads: "the will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government.." What the people want is what matters not the government's own agenda.

Quote:Minor changes that will show negligible results are all that will come of the countless hours and energy that is going to pour out for this cause. The government is tainted by greed, pure greed. Not the wholesome 'I want a better life for my kids than I had' type of greed, but pure greed where they will stop at no costs to attain it. The government, as you know, is not controlled solely by politicians. Major corporations/groups/etc have their hooks deeply planted into the heart of any government. JFK was opposed to war. Where did that get him? and he was the President.

Making sure a president doesn't run for a second term by voting for someone else is not a minor change, its the most obvious signal the public can use to express its discontent. I wouldn't mind spending a couple of hours conveying this message, at least I would feel like I pitched in.
As for the corporations, you're right. There are a lot of politicians that stem from the world of business, many of them own a business of their own. Therefore it's not surprising that conflicts of interest arise, politicians aiming to serve the needs of the public as well as that of their company..of course money is going to become an issue. In the Netherlands this is less of an issue, politicians are usually just politicians.

Quote:The government gives away more money than you could possibly believe. Go to your local library and check out a book on government grants.. See what they'll pay you for! THAT is where you tax dollars go. If you want to fight for fair spending fight in that type of arena.

Right so we're going to take away money from the people that need it but we're not allowed to bitch about money being spent on things we don't need or want.

Quote:When greed comes at any cost (ie. assassinating your own president) its best to just sit back and relax.
WHAT? " I'm sorry Mrs Kennedy about your husband being shot but you know.. its all greed.. nothing we can do" :?
Guy tries to rape a girl.. the girl is screaming no at the top of her lungs... but of course the guy is stronger. You're advice would be to tell the girl to sit back and relax?? Harsh example maybe but in both cases its about somebody trying to enforce something on another person against their will.

oh my mistake.. so its safe to assume there is not such thing as a hidden agenda? The war in Iraq IS/WAS exactly what the people of the United States wanted? It was purely based on weapons of mass destruction and liberation? It doesn't matter what the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says. Its nice and all that someone many years ago thought of a bunch of sweet, human loving laws and wrote them down, but in all truthfullness it means jack shit! As it has been demonstrated countless times and WILL be demonstrated yet again countless times, laws are there but they aren't followed.

I was referring to attempting to take action against the wasteful spending. Bush should not only NOT run a 2nd term he should be impeached and charged with war crimes and never see the light of day again.

I'm not talking about subsidies and grants and other such giveaways that economically challenged people need to survive. I'm talking about the shit grants the government gives out yearly to fill a quotta.

Here are some quotes from a website (http://www.homebucks.com/chucks/Archive ... _2003.html) regarding government grants.

*National history. "$107,000 was appropriated by Congress for a project to study the sex life of the Japanese quail." (Great Government Goofs)

*Medical research. "In 1993 the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine termed 'outlandish' a $3 million federally funded research project to determine whether marijuana will make rabbits more susceptible to syphilis and mice more prone to contract Legionnaires' disease." (Stupid Government Tricks)

*Sociology. "$84,000 [was] approved by Congress for a project to discover why people fall in love." (Great Government Goofs)

*Space travel. "The National Aeronautics and Space Administration spent $23 million to build a prototype toilet for the space shuttle - a 900% increase over the original estimate. Why the overrun? The astronauts wanted a manual flush rather than an automatic one." (From Goofy Government Grants & Wacky Waste)

This type of government spending is where people need to concentrate their efforts. Telling the government to stop wasting money on the running of the country is fruitless. Curbing this type of silly spending is possible.

Quote:WHAT? " I'm sorry Mrs Kennedy about your husband being shot but you know.. its all greed.. nothing we can do" :?

Ok then, what 'would' the appropriate response be? Maybe you've forgotten that Kennedy WAS killed and that NOTHING happened from it? When the government takes out their top man its time to take a step back. If they are willing to assissinate their own president for the sake of war a few pestering citizens will mean nothing to them.

Quote:Guy tries to rape a girl.. the girl is screaming no at the top of her lungs... but of course the guy is stronger. You're advice would be to tell the girl to sit back and relax??

Well if he truly is stronger then it might be in her best interest to try to stay calm and talk him out of it and if that fails go along. If she struggles she'll end getting raped AND beaten. If you are 100% going to get raped wouldn't you rather it just be rape and not have the shit beat out of you as well?? Anyway, poor example and way way way unrelated. We're talking about goverment waste and when its time to just sit back and watch as the goverment does it shit. In case you haven't noticed people are always bitching about the goverment and yet nothing changes. Interesting. Especially with your quote from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Since Article 21 is in existance why is all this happening? why is there hidden agendas? Just because a law is present doesn't mean its enforced. How many people j-walk every day? and how many get ticketed?

I'm not arguing about whether this stuff is right/wrong, constitutional/unconstitutional, I'm just saying, you can bitch til you are blue in the face and the government will not change. They will only change minor things to shut people up. They are not going to go and changet he entire spending habits of a nation because the citizens don't like how they spent the money. That would only make their job/play harder and less lucrative. Now whats the point in that! (from their perspective)

Alright well you know what, I'm going to leave it there. This isn't headed anywhere, let's just agree to disagree. You're starting to put words in my mouth and seem to be disagreeing just for the sake of disagreeing.
I'll keep protesting and you can roll over and accept the greed, the waste and the bullshit the government feeds you.

what are they feeding me that I'm accepting? The fact that the government wasted money? I should get all riled up and start calling people and protesting that the government did this? will it bring the money back? NO. will it stop them from doing it again? NO. So why not protest somethign I can actually change? Seems that you are the one arguing for the sake of arguing. You go about your protesting for government wastefull spending and when you finally coem to the realization you are stuck between a rock and hard place with no where to go maybe you can drop by and re-read this post and you might realize what point I was trying to get accross.

One who wishes to argue for the sake of arguming in my opinion is someone who starts bringing irrelevant topics and arguments into the discussion, not one who sticks to their points!

Power to the blind who can see - Then maybe, change can one day happen.
