Black Day In July just accomplished a spot in the 2003 Rock World Series in Ottawa on '106.9 The Bear' by beating out five bands five nights in a row, partially due to my consistent voting 
. Its odd because they didn't acquire a spot with "The Darkest One" or "Silver Jet"... oh well.

I also voted on the bear. The competition wasn't even close.
On another note, I ordered "Beautiful" through Maple Music yesterday, and it was in my mailbox today. Incredible service. I did pay an extra $3.00 or so for express delivery, but that was damn fast. So, anyone still having a hard time acquiring the CD now know's where to turn.

I can't get enough of this song!
I've never heard the original, but it must be great. Even still, I'm sure that this version has got to top it, the Hip sound absolutely amazing!
Gord's voice sounds fantastic. So powerful. He sounds very enthusiastic; it seems like he's really moved by the haunting imagery of the lyrics. It sounds like he's truley excited to be singing this song, and participating in this tribute.
And is it just me or does Johnny just about knock you out of your seat. Maybe its just the nature of the song, and its beat, but I get totally absorbed in the drumming everytime I listen to this song! And I don't know who's hammering on the tamborine, but it sounds so great with the drums, and adds so much to this song!
Unfortunately I'm not overly enthusiastic about the rest of the album. There are a few half-decent efforts, but most of it just doesn't do anything for me. There are even a few songs that turn me right off. I think all-in-all I would much rather stick with Lightfoot's original takes. Of course there is one song that'll keep me going back time-and-time again!

Great account of the race riots, 1968, in detroit. I was sorta let down that they did not play this song at the detroit show in september.

I do like the Hip's version but to me, an original song is always better. The person who used his/her creative juices to compose a song should always get credit for having the best version of the song. He/she created it and others can just play different versions of it. Well, the only possible exception to this thinking for me is possibly Johnny Cash. Johnny could make someone else's song his own but Johnny was a rare gem.

How interesting to see this posting...as I too heard this song today on Chez 106 for the first time as well. Must say I liked it quite a lot.

Gord's unforgiving voice and Lightfoot's chilling lyric are made for each other:

Always strikes me as powerful whenever I hear it. Gord sounds angry.

I like it for about a minute and a half, but I find the Hip's version flat. In Lightfoot's original, the guitars snap furiously and the drums roar tumultuously. I've almost never heard a song which musically symbolized the message of the lyrics so cogently.
