the guys just expressing his opinion...

I could think of a bunch more people who belong on a dart board before this guy...

I'm not saying he's right, but Canada being the tolerant place that it is, why don't we just tolerate him?

you know what neff, thanks for posting on hipbase. we always appreciate new members, regardless of whether they share the same opinions as everyone else.

on a positive note, im sure we're all happy that you are a big enough fan of Gord and the hip to write this letter. after all, you must be a hip fan if you were so compelled to write this letter.

even though i disagree with you on this topic, it doesnt matter in the grand scheme of things. welcome to the Hipbase.

I was surpirsed Gord said that...my boyfriend says that all the time. I get irritated by SOME self-absorbed Americans and he calls me a racist when I say pro-Canadian things (he's Canadian by the way) :?

Theres a difference between racism and ethnocentrisim... I think Gord was referring to those disgustingly patriotic type who are so consumed with Canadiana that they become ethnocentric ( extreme nationalists )... and the guy that wrote that letter is just a jerk... I really want to punch him in the teeth...
Have a nice day...

Gord is technically correct..cause nationalism and/or patriotism means believing your country is better or morally superior than others. But there's a difference between admiring what your country has accomplished in making the world a better place to live and believing it can do no wrong, that it is morally superior to other countries. Some people, like Mr Neff think the two are one and the same. I think Gord means that unthinking nationalism is inherently racist.. I say be proud of what America and Canada have accomplished and the bedrock principles we were founded on and realize that we are ruled by frail puny human beings who make mistakes...

You guys are right that nationalism can have differing definitions, but those differing definitions make it impossible for us to say Lyle OR Gord are wrong. Neither of them are wrong. But here is where Lyle has some weight to his argument...Gord made a comment about Nationalism that offended people that are from the same country as Gord. Gord needed to be more sensitive to how his comment would impact CANADIANS...if he wasn't talking about Canadians, then he needed to be more specific with his analogy/reference. While it was probably a remark taken out of context and not really thought about, I think Lyle has every right to feel the way he does about it. And the manner with which he addressed his opinion was restrained and compassionate.

If there is one thing we should do as a community, it should be to be accepting of every one's opinion about every member our beloved troop, even when it means someone writing an open letter confronting one of them. I strongly believe that if you asked Gord himself, he would argue that Lyle has every right to feel the way he does and every right to voice his concerns.

If Lyle, as a fellow canadian artist (who remember dedicated a book to gord), were to make a condescending comment tomorrow about national pride, he would be open to the same treatment from any of his fans.

My opinion, Canadian nationalism is rarely more harmful then passive american bashing, and never approaches racism...I am a proud canadian, but defnitely not a nationalist.

here here to everybody with an opinion. when i first read mr.neff's letter i wasn't offended in the least. But i've always been a pretty tolerant dude, I always tried to think out of the cardboard box that society has placed poeple in that says that we need not respect others point of view, when it comes to matters of personnal opinion. We all deserve the right to be heard and also to give responses to whatever the hell was said. As an aboriginal these values are at the root of what we are taught as we grow up, respect your parents, love your brothers and sisters, treat others as you'd want to be treated. laterzzzzzzz

I will not give up. My face is set,my gait is fast,my goal is heaven,my road is narrow,my way is rough,my companions are few,my guide is reliable,my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity,or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I will not give up,shut up or slow down....Blessed Be!
