I was in Ottawa today, listening to Chez 106, and they played The Hip version of Black Day in July! I wonder if this is coming out as a single?
Sounded great, and I hope that Q107 here in Toronto starts playing it.

Isn't "Black Day in July " the Hip's contribution to the soon to be released tribute CD to Gordon Lightfoot? That is their cover of Lightfoot's song for the project, if I am correct. Can anyone confirm this?

Yeah... I heard it too on Chez tonight... sound just delicious... although Gordon Lightfoots writing doesn't bring out the best of the Hip... very repetitive, no real chorus, and no thunderous guitar solo... It's nice just to sit back and listen to the lyrics though... pretty powerful...
Any other city had the privilege yet?

You're right about not bringing out the best of the Hip...no matter how they do it, I was really disapointed to learn they'd picked THAT song. I'm a big Lightfoot fan, but in my mind, the Hip and BDIJ don't mix.
The tribute album is called Beautiful, and it's available October 7th.

check out the hip.com, it explains why they picked Black Day in July. again, it's not a song you would think they would cover, but when you read why they did, it makes sense.

Ed Fitz is another one of those cyclical songs, very repetitive - Gordon's version is brilliant, I love the song (and that whole album, in fact), but I don't know if it would sound all that good rocked up. Not that I'm bashing your choice - I just don't personally see it being improved by making it harder or louder.
Gord's explanation makes sense...and ever since I've been thinking about it, it's very hard to imagine a Lightfoot song that IS well suited to the Hip. Considering the countryish-folkish stuff they've done - and songs like Radio Show - I was thinking maybe they would do a good job with Slide On Over (off Cold On The Shoulder - would have been awesome) or Now and Then (which could end up sounding a little like Oh Honey off the Men With Brooms soundtrack, and it would be a good thing). Maybe Don Quixote coulda been cool...

Just heard it again... but not on Ottawa's Classic Rock Authority, Chez 106... but on Ottawa's New Rock Alternative XFM 101... which is weird cause all they play is Evanesance and Three Days Grace... in fact the only Hip songs I've heard on XFM are Fully Completely and Hundredth Meridian. I've going to assume it was relased as a single if two Ottawa stations are playing it.

I still haven't heard this song. I went to 5 music stores today including HMV, Music World, Future Shop, Sunrise and they were all sold out of the Tribute album. This is nuts
Can someone who has the album post a link or upload to 100th meridian ftp or somewhere?
Would be great to hear Black Day. I feel like such a fake fan for not hearing it anywhere yet.

I just went to HMV and Music World, both claimed that the album has been out for weeks, and it's sold out!!! Anyone else finding it???
