Do corporations have too much power in the media?
#1

Just came out of a very fascinating Sociology class where we discussed this...what do you guys think? Personally, I wish that Clear Channel didnt have as much power over music selection played on the air, but on the other hand I don't think the average person really cares what they hear on the radio as long as they like it;its nonconformists like us that want to hear a different variety of music on the radio and not getting it cause a majority of people treat music as wallpaper, just something to listen to. "Do corporations have too much power in the media?" The media are predominantly corporations in themselves . Look no further than media giant AOL Time Warner . Corporations are entities meant to monopolize and control markets , media and politics , all in the name of financial gain and power . (in my opinion) The power at hand for media giants such as Aol Time Warner with control of news sources grant them a massive amount of publicity to advertise their own interests , not only in the form of commercials but in the reporting of so called "News" . Obviously reports on any kind of negative publicity to any one of their numerous holdings would be foolish to air on CNN . Naturally the News broadcast on these Corporate owned stations would clearly present a bias and possible conflict of interest, especially when factored in is the fact that corporations such as Aol Time Warner are concerned with fiscal gain and not integrity in the realm of News Media . That's my 2 cents. (The few control the many)

Here's a list of AOL Time Warners holdings.

AOL-TW owns Railway Magazine?! Geez...I never pictures that being a part of a corporate behemoth, it always seemed like such a purist publication...you know, down low with the railfans...the things you learn!

Speaking of things I've learned, I just heard that the "merger with" (more like foolish acquisition by) AOL has turned into such a catastrophic failure now that the Net bubble has burst, that AOL-TW is dropping AOL from its name and going back to Time Warner. AOL, which once overshadowed the older company with 6x theoretical worth is now the 5th largest of the conglomerate's subsidies. It's been such an embarrassing (and costly) collapse that it's not even worthy of being in the company name! Score one for the little guys!

PS Ironic that youmentioned Hurray for the CBC...while Time Warner makes blockbuster profits, the CBC lost another $10 million, it was reported today...

I know, I heard... Cry however, we need to support the CBC in order to sustain our good and relatively unbiased station.... after all, it is probably the only public thing we own...

Whenever I want to get a straight story, or something controversial... I just turn to the CBC... I wish more people were willing to support it.....

No only do corporations have to much power in the media, they have way to much power over Government as well. Confusedhock:

yeh! Like when Clinton was running, and he was going to try to legislate that all genetically modified foods be labelled... and then Monsanto (large large pesticide/testing company) gave him lots of cash for his campaign, so Clintion dropped the push for legislation...
Funny, it was like the idea vaporised....
