Private Hip Show for Hipbasers.
#1

After the brilliant question proposed by CanuckCorage regarding Hipbasers Uniting (which we will still do regardless), we got to thinking about a private show for Hipbasers, Henhousers and friends. Roughly 400 people or so.

First of all, below is an exerpt from the Hipbasers Unite Topic:

"You would figure that The Hip are well aware of the hipbase and henhouse...so getting a SLIGHTLY better rate should be possible.
I don't see it beeing $250,000, and for sure more than $40,000, but the way I see it is they play a good number of shows in the states and elsewhere at places like the Aladdin Theatre in Portland where there are maybe 800 people in there at $30 Canadian...grossing $24,000 Canadian. Even, if they do a House of Blues Show, there are still only 1400 fans or so, paying $30, grossing $42,000.

If we had 400 people at $100 a head, that's $40,000 gross. Does that sound like much of a difference?

Again, this is the start of this process. Costs, location and feesability are yet to be determined. We will let you know, or if anyone finds anything out, let us know. Use this topic post for providing insight and information.

Thanks,
Mats.

Why not, we could at least ask them?!?! You never know.

Mats-you may have already thought of this, but we may want to start at The Hip's management instead of contacting The Hip directly, since we all know how speedy their email replies usually are. :? Anyways, here's their new management link. http://www.slfa.com/ It appears as if they're willing to help out with "Special Events", which I think this would fall under. I'm not sure if you're the head of this operation Mats, but if someone is, this would probably be the best place to start. This is starting to sound like a GREAT idea, it's just important that we keep this purely for The Hipbase...

Great - thanks Heron. Contacting the new mangement team is exactly what I had in mind.

Yes, I will head this up, so again, please don't hesitate to help out and never assume I have already thought of something.

Also to everyone, please do not contact the Hip or their management about this idea until we have all decided what the appropriate steps are. Let's keep this clean and tidy, and let's make it happen!

I hope to propose this to their management by 4:00pm EST, Monday August 11th. We have until then to put this approach together.

Cripes, I feel like saying "Wonder Twin powers - ACTIVATE!"

Talk to me,
Mats.

Toronto seems like the most appropriate place to stage this...and while the idea of a big backyard does sound great to us, you'd think The Hip would be much more willing to play some sort of club...anyone in the GTA have any connections at any bars/clubs/halls? And Mats, have you already spoken with their management and they've given you that deadline, or is that just what you're shooting for? Another thing to bring up, which may help us, is if we agree to donate some of the money we raise to Camp Trillium...means we'd have to raise a little more money, but you know that would help us bring them in, and above all, we'd get to donate some cash to those in need....just a thought...

According to this site, for a US college to book the Hip, they want $15 000 US

*gulp*
but that includes access to Gord's dressing room, right?
Actually, that's not bad! I thought it said $150,000 at first.

That's quite good considering our first thought was $40,000 Canadian. Did anyone take a look at how much some of the other acts charge though??? Linkin Park? $100,000??? And why are all the big country acts so expensive?

Hey Mats et al:
This thread sounds somewhat familiar? In fact I've actually got all the logistics laid out ( a college/business project I did)
A well written proposal is a MOST positive approach.
I have the connections to Camp Trillium if that's the avenue to take (it was for my project) Camp Trillium budget for the band/event, they receive profit as donation
Kingston is an IDEAL venue (central) I had chosen Grant Hall at Queen's but since discovered there's better venues (outdoors if the time of year is good)
Anyways, in my long winded way, I'm saying I'm IN Mats-get in touch

see what happens - i make a slightly sarcastic remark, and it starts to sound like a good idea.

just think about how great this would be, i'm sure the hip have never payed to a crowd in which EVERYONE knows the words to every song. there would also be a lot of pressure to play a few gems! :thumb:

i cant see why they would turn down this request (assuming the proposal is well done) because to say no would really upset a lot of their biggest fans. Cry

There would also be much LESS pressure to play the overdone stuff, NOIS, etc...but yeah, if they'd play for a corporation if the price was right, I'm sure they'd play for loyal fans who would also pay the price...anyways, lets just help out Mats with whatever he needs and hope that this all works out! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Wow - you guys are awesome!

Thanks for all the input.

To make one thing clear, we would be shooting for sometime early next year when they do the next album tour. I figure if we get the ball rolling now, we will have enough time for them to schedule us in during the time when they are in Southern Ontario. As well it will give out-of-towners time to prepare.

With regards to next Monday at 4:00, I just through that out there - I like deadlines, they keep me organized. However, deadlines are meant to be broken, so if we are not ready by then , so be it, but we will make sure we do this very soon. I am a guy like most of you, who believes in the right propsal and the right approach. I will do you proud.

As well, I am in the bar business in the Toronto area, we manufacture and sell liquor and draft control systems. We know everyone, so lining up and indoor/bar gig will be no problem when the time comes.

Next step - today/tomorrow I will be PMing those people that have offered their ideas, contacts and help. I will keep each one of you informed as to what everyone is responsible for.

Thanks again, and I look forward to making this work.

Cheers,
Mats.

i would also suggest that this concert be open to currently registered hipbsers. that would stop people from registering just for the opportunity to go to the show. for example, say that it is open only to members who registered on or before august 7 or something.
