Music @ Work
#1

Hi guys. Just found this site and it's pretty cool. I love the Hip. And now, my topic.

Is it just me, or is Music@Work by far the worst album the Hip have put out? Not that it's really a bad album, just that it doesn't hold a candle to any of their other work. Not for me anyway.

Yea, M@W is not the best album to date. Still has a few gems on it though.

I need 2 Kingston Tickets, please help.

I say M@W is like one of thier best in my opinion, its just a progresssion in what they've been doin for thousands of years, and when they don't conform to everyones cardbaord box that people think they belong in,then everyone gets ina kerfuffle about it, that album for me and members of my clan has eclipsed our very idea's of what out of this-world-music means and what kind of effect it can have on one's very soul. Like Jim Morrison said " I guess they just didn't get it" Sorry and no offence, i don't wanna sound rude but i feel that some fans haven't really listened to M@W. just one's fans opinion........Summit :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
\you gotta take your soul right to the studio when they recorded that song you say doesn't cut it for you and see them with your minds eye doin what we all want to do :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

I will not give up. My face is set,my gait is fast,my goal is heaven,my road is narrow,my way is rough,my companions are few,my guide is reliable,my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity,or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I will not give up,shut up or slow down....Blessed Be!

I agree with Lance , I mean i love Music@Work(the song) , puts a smile on my face . Tiger The Lion is great ! Ditto for Lake Fever . The Bastard is Wicked - "And All of This Augers Well , Even Though , Even so , It's Presaging Pell-Mell" I still can't get that line out of my head . And contrary to popular opinion Wild Mountain Honey has a special place in my heart .

M@W kicks ass. it is one of the best hip albums in my opinion. the thing about this album is everyone hates it the first time they listen to it, much like CMG.the whole album has an incredible flow to it. M@W is an album that really has to be listened to with an open mind. everyone whp hates it should give it another listen - start to finish.

Don't get me wrong. I don't hate it. Not at all. It's just that I think any of the other albums (even the EP) are much better.

I guess I'm trying to say it's poor by Hip standards, but blows most everything by everybody else away.

Im with Lance too. Although probably my least fave/listened to Hip album, it does still host some real gems. Stay is one of the best slower Hip songs ever, and Putting Down/ The Bastard and Freak Turbulence are typically modern day Hip songs. When will they make another Up To Here??? Unlikely, I know.

But why would you want them to make another UTH or Road Apples or any of their classics? To me thats what I love about them THEE most is that they are always experimenting with what they can do as musicians, kinda like Zeppelin, they were so out there on a limb and never afraid of the consequences. :rambo: :rambo: Isn't that the reason why we all got into The Hip because it was a fresh new everchanging sound? That among other things is why I continue with this band because of that autonomy as Gord said one year. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: Just one Fanboys opinion

Songs 1 through 8... top notch in my book.
The rest of the disk I haven't been able to get into yet. It would be near the bottom in my total, all-encompassing disk review, but it has three of my favorite Hip songs ever...

Music at Work, Lake Fever, and Freak Turbulence.

So, go figure.

maybe i'm completely alone in this, but I love every song on M@W. In fact, I love every song on every Hip album. I honestly don't even remotely dislike a single one of their songs. Granted, some songs I like more than others, but I like them all.

As for M@W, my opinion is opposite in a way of that of the above post. Tracks 1-8 are fantastic, but the album really takes off when the drum loop to Sharks (track 9) starts up. The run of Wild Mountain Honey/Train Overnight/The Bear is as solid a 1-2-3 punch as anything in the Hip's catalog. It's such a shame that The Bear was never played live. That song is simply incredible.

As much as I love M@W, I think the band itself seems to agree with those who aren't really into M@W that much. I was amazed at the sharp drop-off in M@W songs played on the IVL tour. Music was a staple, and Lake Fever got regular play. Putting Down and Freak Turbulence popped up once or twice each, and that's it. Tiger, Stay, Completists, TO#4, Honey, Train - they all got dropped entirely. Think back to past tours - the DFN tour featured plenty of FC stuff, TATH had tons of DFN, PP had lots of TATH, and M@W had alot of PP still around. But The IVL tour abandoned M@W for some reason. The only logical explanation for it is that the band didn't like playing the M@W tunes, which at least hints at the possibility of them not liking the tunes themselves.

I recently bought the album Music @ Work (I'm a beginning hip fan), and I have to say that I liked the album the minute I heard it. It's still too early for me to point out a favorite album or song, but Music @ Work will be in the top.

Wild Mountain Honey... I'm beginning to think this song is about the fall of Saigon and specifically The American Embassy at the end of the Vietnam War.

I don't wanna put another thought
in my head.

The humming bird is cleared for maintenance,
(~Hummingbird a metaphor for Helicopter and Maintenace=Saving face for the media , with a heroic rescue , a diversion from the true impact of the war.~ )
evacuating long after it made no sense. (~Viet Cong had taken over the vast majority of Vietnam and the War was clearly over before the evacuation.~)
It's not so much a load and stay anymore
as a gotta-get-down-the-road-before-the-
temperature-soars.(~Obviosley evacuate since the NVA was on the doorstep.~)

I don't wanna put a little thought
in your head. (~Too late Gord...~)

Diplomacy goes even better with drinks
Until the big city trees begin to shrink.
It's not so much a load out and stay anymore
it's gotta get down the road before the
snarling traffic roars(~again the need to evacuate before the "snarling traffic roars" or the NVA attacks , could also represent media heat and public pressure~)

I don't wanna ask you,
'What you got in your head?' (~Could be a question to the listener or the American Government at the time.~)
I'm not gonna ask you
a whole bunch of questions.

OK, we agree to disagree...
Giving up... Giving up the Embassy
is a whole lot better than,
The Embassy's Surrendering.(~typical political postureing , much better image of heroism in the waning moments rather than a quiet retreat with no drama , thus the dramatic Evacuation of the American Embassy and just the reality of the great cost of the war to the Americans and the Vietnamese , about saving some face~)

Flying home under the approval of the stars,
I couldn't be more at home with the way
things are so hard.
It's not so much a load out and stay anymore
it's gotta get down the road before the
confetti cannon blows
with litigious force.

I don't wanna ask you,
'What you got in your head?'
I'm not gonna ask you
'Whatcha been thinking?'

I don't wanna put another thought
in my head.

I don't wanna put another thought
in my head.

Obviously this is just my interpretation , maybe a stretch , but i think that's what the song is about.. This is just a link about the fall of Saigon. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.marforlant.usmc.mil/Site/Stories/Fall%20of%20Saigon.htm">https://www.marforlant.usmc.mil/Site/St ... Quite a creative take on WMH. Very interesting read.

As for the overall subject at hand, I think that as an album, M@W leaves something to be desired, some songs seem flat and stale, but when put in a live setting all the songs really come to life (Tiger, Lake Fever, M@W).

I remember being at the ACC when the M@W songs were debuted on NYE and NYD at the millennium and being psyched for the new album cause the songs were so great and then being mostly disappointed with the album versions, especially Lake Fever.

I was hesitant to catch many shows in the fall/winter but the Evening With... part really got me so I thought I'd give it a go and right from the first instance of a M@W song being played live my ideas of the songs changed back to when I had first heard them. Needless to say I was quite impressed with the reworkings.

Yeah, I saw the Evening With... tour and the M@W songs completely blew me away there. That being said though, I'll take a live version of any Hip song over any album version.
