Hi all,
I was lucky enough last night to see the strawbs!
Does anyone here like them?
It was a really small venue like 300 people...just a beautiful night of wonderful acoustic music!

They are somewhat folk/rock.
They have been around for like 35 years. It was the first time they toured in 20 years. First time in North America in 25 yrs.
I don't know if you have heard of Dave Cousins or Dave Lampert?
They are 2 of the orginal members.
Anyway considering they haven't toured in over 20yrs I felt really privledged too see them!
Dave Cousins at the end of the show said...See you in another 25 yrs.

I downloaded 4 or 5 songs ( Hero and Heroine , Down by the Sea , A Glimpse of Heaven and Stormy Down . ) and they all sounded pretty cool . I do like alot of folk music though . I don't know if you've heard any Stan Rogers , he's more East Coast Folk sounding , but he's one of best folk singer-songwriters out there , at least before he died . Songs like : Oh No Not I , The Idiot , 45 Years , The Witch Of The Westmorland and Barrett's Privateers are some excellent examples of his work . His brother Garnet Rogers wrote a song in tribute to Stan called Night Drive , It's just a beautifull song . Anyways , I think I'll be grabbing one of those Strawbs albums next time I go CD shopping . Later .

Those are all excellent songs!
I would also recommend Blue angel and round and round.
If you are going to get a cd I would get "the best of"
They have a new one out to called Hummingbird.
Glad you like them...in this day and age I find it hard to discouver new music that is actually good!
I will check Stan out...sounds like I would like him!

I like those two as well as Lay Down . We sure get sheltered from alot of good music here , in North America . It's too bad it takes a Shakira or the like to hit it " Big" before we take notice of other genres or Countries Musical talents . I guess radio is about selling advertisements and only mainstream tunes with a catchy jingle get the job done . On the positive side there is so much great music to discover .

That's so true!
It seems that the only music that really makes it is crap.
To many examples to name! It's a shame that the majority of people support this music by buying the music and requesting it etc...
What other types of bands to you like that I may not have heard of?
I am always looking for other bands that I can respect as well as enjoy!

Well if you dig any of S.Rogers stuff you may like Fine Crowd . Masterless Men have some decent stuff . The Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues is a great song and so is And A Bang On The Ear . I like alot of Gordon Lightfoot , alot of his early stuff is good , check out a song of his called Ballad Of Yarmouth Castle , it's off his Sunday Concert album , which is a live album recorded at Massey Hall in the late sixties . Hayden , The Pixies , Lowest of The Low and Kathleen Edwards are some others . I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have as well . If you check in the non Tragically Hip Discussion and look about 20 topics down to one called Musical Expansion , alot of Hipbase members have made suggestions on which bands are worth checking out , that may help too . Anyways 5:30 comes early so I'm going to bed . Later .

Wow a lot bands I have never heard of.
I will have to check them out! Are they easy to download?
I find sometimes that bands that arn't that well known are really hard to find for downloading.
I went to 3 record stores the other day and couldn't find any Strawbs cd's!
A band I really like is Incubus. They are an awsome band musically and lyrically. I'm not sure if you would like them. But I would suggest checking them out! You may have heard their radio song drive.
I am also a huge fan of Oasis although not as much as I used to be.
I think that Noel Gallagher is a Great songwriter.
Red hot chili peppers are also a favorite!
I like Gordon Lightfoot also.
Oh yeah and what about Lenord Cohen..do you like him?
Anyway better go..I'm slacking here at work!

I just happened across a Strawbs cd yesterday in a Saskatoon Future Shop. I wouldn't have even noticed if it wasn't for this thread. I had a listen and it sounds pretty cool. I'm going to look around a bit more here in Calgary for the best of though. I only had cash for one and I had already decided on Led Zep "phsical graffiti" so I'll pick it up next time.
Courage, since you're a fan of the pixies do you like any of frank blacks stuff? and did you catch the show here in Calgary at the beginning of April?
I missed it and now I'm kicking myself cause I've been listening to this Frank Black "Devil's Workshop" constantly since a friend gave it to me last week. Very cool. I've also been listining to Minus 5 quite a bit and the new White Stripes albums which are both great IMHO.
I'm going to look into a few of those other artist you mentioned as well. I love discovering good new music.

DyersBay , some of those tunes are hard to find , but most aren't . It depends on what file sharing program you're using . If you have Kazaa Lite you shouldn't have too much trouble . Iv'e heard a few Incubus songs on the radio and liked them , just haven't heard any of their albums - I'll definitely get one . As for Oasis , the Gallagher brothers used to annoy the hell out me , although I liked a few of their songs ( Don't look back in anger ) I couldn't bring myself to buy any of their albums . That being said , I am pretty ignorant to their music , I'll try and work past my prejudice and spring for one of their albums . I love the Chili Peppers - great band , and I do have a couple Leonard Cohen albums , The Partisan is one of my favourite songs .
Hey Royce , I haven't heard any Frank Black , but I'll definitely check him out . Ditto for Minus 5 . I like the White Stripes , at least a couple songs Ive heard , and was planning to get the album . I heard the promo albums they gave to radio stations wer'e all on vinyl . Love to get my hands on one . Don't have a record player-need one . I've got a couple Hip albums on vinyl and it's like... Damn I need a record player ! I do most of my CD shopping at A&B Sound , they seem to have the best selection and you can't beat $13-$14 bucks for a new release . Just looked up the Strawbs at A&B online and they have 18 of their albums .
Any other bands that you recommend , please let me know .

Hey CanuckCourage I actually use WinMX. I have tried Kazaa
and find it really hard to download onto a disc.
WinMx is really easy to use but doesn't have as many trades to choose from.
I will try WinMx though.
If you are looking to buy an Oasis album I would suggest Defintly maybe or Standing on the shoulder of giants.
The third album Be here now, is awful don't waste your money like I did!
For Incbus I would suggest S.C.I.E.N.C.E, right now that one is my favorite album.
I also forgot to mention Janes addition.
Of course we don't have an A&B here in London.
Now I know where to look online though! (thanks Royce)! :thumb:
I will also have to check out the suggestions from you Royce!

if you like frank black t hen you have to get some pixies that band rocks, i will always say to check out Jeff Buckley man i love the way he sings . also check out chris robinsons cd new earth mud
