I post over at murmurs sometimes, and I was thrilled to hear about this. I love R.E.M and this sounds like a great set, a must for any R.E.M fan. You can see the complete track listing on R.E.M's website:

I love REM, but I find this kind of weird. The single disc seems like a re-release of Eponymous but with more songs.

I also love REM, but I find that this re-releasing, re-packing, special edition-izing of their material to be too much. All the IRS albums have "UK" versions with special stuff on them. They released all of post-IRS material in repackaged editions a couple of years ago. They came out with a Greatest Hits "In Time" and a Greatest Hits "In Time -Special Edition". There's Eponymous and Dead Letter Office.
There's so much of this "must-have" stuff that it's impossible to have it all.
So, I'll wait eagerly for the next studio release, but I won't bite at this. But for the real die hards out there, I hope it's fantastic and I hope you enjoy it a lot.

I think the DVD will be the real treat here. As mentioned above though, I am a huge collector, and will be picking up the double cd & the dvd on the 12th regardless.
In 1992, IRS released a "best of" cd to capitalize on the success of Automatic for the People. I think it was widely released in Europe/Japan, but not so much here in North America. It was a 16 track compilation and compared to this upcoming release, there are 7 different tracks.

As far as I know, Eponymous was released against the band's will and they wanted nothing to do with it, they felt it was way to soon to release a hits album. And you have to assume "In Time" was released due to contractual obligations, but at least they toured for it. This collection is mainly for people who've only discovered r.e.m in the latter years and might not have all the older albums. For hardcore fans like me the special edition is a great package, the b-sides album + the dvd are well worth it.

I finally was able to purchase this album today. There must have been some confusion with the release date, that or the truck bringing the albums to Canada tipped over on the highway or got really lost. I tried to get this album all last week and it wasn't available anywhere. So i finally went back again to the mall today and only one store had it (the double album that is). Anyone else have that problem?
Anyway, excellent compilation, some of the demos, b-sides and live tracks are great. Well worth the extra bucks, if anyone is contemplating buying it, imo.

perhaps I am foggy on this and to lazy to google/wiki but I recall when eponymous came out, around the same time as Green (when the band switched labels) that IRS purposely created the same cover look to fool folks...(or is that a ole Athens legend now etched as concrete oh these 17/18 years0..
anyway I guess what I am wondering - it seemed in late 80s IRS owned the tunes or a large portion therein (hence eponymous) but know REM does so --- the best of the IRS years

I too had a problem tracking the 2 cd set down. It was actually listed as an import up here in Thunder Bay, not sure if the rest of Canada got the same treatment.
I really enjoy the package. REM started at Losing My Religion for someone my age, so to hear all these tunes, and the outtakes, combined with a great essay to start, it was worth the price. And for an import, it was still reasonalby priced.

I went to HMV about 4 days after the release date, and couldn't find anything. I looked everywhere, and eventually asked an employee if they had it in stock. She checked her computer and said it should be on the shelves, and when she went to show me, there was nothing.
She ended up going into the back, and found a copy (of the double cd), and brought it out to me, saying that nobody had put them out yet.
And you wonder why the business suffers.....
