I have recently created a Google Earth file showing locations of places mentioned in various Hip songs as well as tour locations for the last 3 years . I have also added it to the The Hip Story Project.

It is a first draft and comments are welcome in order to refine it....

Ironic. I just reinstalled Google Earth today. And I thought, all my Hip locations were gone. This is freaky, man.

I would like to add a layer to the Google Earth file showing where albums were recorded. Could someone aid me in geo-referencing the location of the following TTH albums - I had a quick check on TTH Discography section on Wikiipedia and was greeted with ??? -

Here is my list of ones I have found (From “Have not been the same The CanRock Renaissance” )

Road Apples - Daniel Lanois's studio @ Chartres & Espanada New Orleans

I thought I would let folks know I have up-date the Google Earth file (TTH_places_v02.kmz) for the Lyrical Places of TTH – it can be downloaded at:

I have added a few more places that I found references to in a Museum After Dark. For example, Mean Streak, which references the “crookedest street”, a reference to Lombard Street in San Francisco? I have also added the locations where the Albums were recorded (thanks horseplaya71 and Naga). I have used descriptions of the Albums from Wikipedia, with a link to a review in allmusic.com. The Wikipedia descriptions are very limited, but it is a start. Finally, I have added the tour locations for 2003 with links to the setlist from HipBase.

Next update will be after October 17th when I have access to the lyrics of what I hope is a geo-album, especially with a title like “World Container”….

btw, when checking out the recent photo of GD in NYC as part of a video shoot, I noticed that the Lyrical Places of TTH GE file was picked up by the Google Earth Blog, complete with a link back to the Band’s website.

Yes... some of the recording of DFN was at The River Mill.

Not sure if this was mentioned - but some of World Conatiner was recorded in Maui.

From an initial read of some of the posted lyrics, thanks worldpeace, emperor penguin, TLB and Tthip, World Container has only a few geographical places mentioned, considering its all encompassing title,

Mistaken Point Newfoundland and MoonBeam Ontario show up side by side in Fly, reminiscent of Silver Jet’s from Clayoquot Sound to Cape Spear
Also, with the reference to Cleveland in the song World Container, Ohio has now joined Louisiana and New York State as part of the coveted Two Hip Song States or THSS (not to be confused with the Texas Historical Shootist Society).

While short on particular places, although city/town is used in the Kids don’t get it and Pretend the album does have the larger geographic theme of Water ranging in scale from Lake (perhaps another reference to Lake Fever, aka L.Ontario) to Ocean (even Fly includes the line Coastline rising out of the ocean) not to mention the classic parental water warning of childhood about the Drop Off.

Now that I realize that the Hip, through lyrics based on location and proximity are solving great Canadian Mysteries I better re-read The Bear so I can find out what happened to Tommy Thompson….
