I know a lot is being made of the acoustic trio of songs played out of the break, and don't get me wrong, I think that's awesome and a great idea.

But if we think back to the last "Evening With" tour, if I remember correctly, they wound up sort of settling into a groove where they did that exact same format (i.e., first three tunes of second set are performed acoustically). The only difference was that they didn't do the whole "sit-down" move, which frankly I don't really get. I watched that Youtube video of The Bear from last night, and it was amazing to hear that song live, and how they treated it etc, but it certainly appeared to me as though Gord D. was somewhat out of his element sitting down.

Again, don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to piss on anyone's party. I am psyched that they're on the road again, dusting off some great gems, etc. But upon further review, this "acoustic mini-set" thing didn't exactly come out of left field.

Actually, for the Evening With Tour the only thing really acoustic about the second set was the opening song. It was almost always a slow song - Wheat Kings, Scared, etc.. Then the second song was anything, but usually something heavy/faster.

Who played what on this song? I remember the logistics of three guitars and a bass never seemed to work in the past...

Yea, I am totally cool with being subjective on here when it comes to the Hip. However, I think we need to get about a half dozen shows into this tour to really get an idea of how diverse (setlist wise) this tour is going to be. I do think if you compare this show/setlist to anything from the last several years, it really crushes them. I am NOT a huge fan of Titanic or The Bear... they are both decent but I really do think the format is cool....ie..2 sets, acoustic set opening the second set, many rarer tunes, a scattering of hits and a couple song encore....

I think the acoustic set gives the guys a chance to really deliver the songs in a different and more intimate way. My two cents on the Gord D sitting down thing is.... the Hip are a band...all men equal players...yes Downie is the front guy but I am sure he probably came up with the idea of himself sitting so the rest of the guys can shine a bit during the acoustic set....

Also, regarding the acoustic set....it is really fun to daydream about what three songs the guys will do in that slot every night (assuming they change it up each night)....endless possibilities...ie...Fiddlers, Opiated, Wheat Kings..or maybe...Gems, Penquin and Scared...or how about...Another Midnight, Toronto #4 and Bobcaygon??? Endless :thumb:

I think what he was agreeing with was what I said about the "acoustic mini-set" - not so much the song selection. I think that setting aside personal opinions of the songs themselves, the song selection was diverse by anyone's reasonable standard of diversity. And I for one was THRILLED with the song selection and would have been in awe to have been there. Others' mileage may vary - kinda depends on your opinion of Titanic and The Bear and Eldo, et al. Those happen to be three of my favorite tunes I've never seen them play.

As for the acoustic mini-set - the two 2000 Evening With shows I saw, each night the second set opened with three acoustic numbers. This was in late Oct, so the tour was in full swing but still had a ton of shows to go. As the tour wore on, those song slots (songs 1, 2 and 3 of set two) became fairly fixed, swapping the same three tunes every other show. So, "night 1" was Scared, Train Overnight and Opiated, and "night 2" was Wheat Kings, Wild Mountain Honey and Boots Or Hearts. I could be remembering wrong, but it seems that they used these two trios of songs many, many times as the tour wound closer to conclusion.

I also remember when the tour kicked off in WNY, it was anything goes. That acoustic thing sort of evolved over the first few weeks of the tour, whereas this time (obviously) it's more planned out - hence the different drum set, seats, etc.
