My fav (bakers) dozen: Giftshop, lake fever, Vapor trails, emperor "the" penguin, vancouver divorce, thugs, Pigeon camera, honey please, depression suite (the rock), now for plan A, new maybe - yer not the ocean, by divine right abac, titanic terrarium. All worth extra listens, which I will look forward to.
Lowlights ... Strombo pretending to be a huge hip fan. Not as bad as him trying to be a "hockey guy" on HNIC... but not by much. Found it very annoying how he kept stuffing "this is not a eulogy" into our ears, even worse was his talking over the music.
Grace, Courage, Killerwhaletank. These three fell well short in my opinion, perhaps because they are sacred to this fervent hipbaser. An analogy that crossed my mind was it would be like someone trying to wear #66 or #99 in the NHL - pretty big shoes (skates?) to fill.
Grace could have been the backing track on the trailer for a movie or videogame targeted at a younger generation. Almost a weak effort at a NIN sound? Courage was a slightly better effort but still fell short of the mark. The arkells M@W felt the closest to a "live show" energy, and the approach Arkells took could have done the originals far more justice than the lacklustre treatment given to those "big 3" songs. Arkells struck me as true fans and I would have loved to hear more covers from them. Would have also been fine by me if Killerwhaletank was left alone to its legendary status and not attempted by anyone.
The guy who covered tired as fuck and stars covering what blue were examples of great choices that fit well with their bands vibes. Ditto for whoever did no threat. Felt the opposite was true for Limblifter (who tried 50mc) and Ps i love you (small town bringdown) George - "i love the dissonance of that cover. Definitely got a new years day/new year ahead feel." ... why does it "definitely" have that george? wtf does that even mean?
Gus and budget shoes were major duds imo. Felt that escape@hand and nautical lacked the emotion those lyrics convey, and the covers fell flat as a result. Although I did find the nautical instrumentation was enjoyable.
Didn't particularly care for the dramatic reading of every irrelevance or choir choir choir feeding us their schtick. Rheostatics bobC seemed like a weak effort, would have expected more from them. And a better performance to close the show.
Got the feeling some of the artists may have been there to jump on the bandwagon and grab some free exposure (and likely some free cbc$) Others came across as being there for the right reasons, to pay tribute - like Jim bryson, who's cover of scared felt awkward, heartfelt and genuine. Same goes for By divine right and Sarah harmer with her underage story before thompson girl.
Enjoyed lieve prins fully completely segment, looking forward to the upcoming piece with Billy Ray.
Thats more than everythings enough out of me for one night.
