I'm still holding out for a late March/early April release. May just seems like it's so far away. As mentioned earlier in this thread, the album has been finished since early November and it's probably sitting in a vault at Universal collecting dust while we wait for some sleazy record execs to get their marketing strategy together. The turnaround time between finishing an album and releasing it is beyond ridiculous these days. It would be cool if they could just pull a Neil Young and put the thing out already. Wishful thinking, I know. But stranger things have happened...like Bruce Springsteen releasing two new albums in less than a year and a half.

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous when you consider that the only marketing strategy they have needed for The Hip since FC is RELEASE TRAGICALLY HIP ALBUM ---> MAKE A SHITLOAD OF MONEY. I mean, seriously. No matter when they release this it's gonna sell a huge load of copies. I'm not complaining, though. Maybe it's the band and not the label; maybe they're just waiting for... something. Or maybe the label is waiting for that "something" instead. Who know or truly cares? It'll come out in due time and it'll be amazing. We know those two things to be true, at least.

Sadly though, new Tragically Hip albums don't exactly make a lot of money anymore. Back in the mid-90s they were selling upwards of 500,000 copies in Canada alone whenever they released a new album, but since then their record sales have been on the decline along with the music industry itself. To the Hip's credit they've consistently gone platinum (100,000 copies) with each new album since Music@Work, which I guess is fairly decent in today's musical climate. But it's nowhere near what they were selling at the peak of their popularity. Anyways, my point is that it doesn't really matter when they release the new record, because it'll probably sell exactly or slightly below what their last few albums have sold. Hardcore fans like us will rush out and get it on the first day, and then it'll drop out of the charts faster than you can say "killerwhaletank". So what exactly are they waiting for? Just put the damn thing out and be done with it. My guess is that they're waiting until their touring plans are in place before they release the album. Then they can announce everything all at the same time and ramp up the excitement for the fans.

I guess summer outdoor concerts probably are the most fun to play and make the most money.

I would imagine they would also want to take some time with their families before heading off on the road again. Especially gord, who I think must have been away from home for a while there, between the hip records and the solo albums.

And as much as I can try to rationalize this, I still want it out yesterday!!

I think we need to step back from the ledge...I think they know what they are doing and whatever works best for the band and come on we all know they have a plan and I am willing to wait, plus I am forced to. We could be stuck with a band that doesn't release an album until every 5 years and not tour for the same amount of time. It will be worth it then we will have lots to talk about plus a tour :thumb:

The advertisements tonight for the Juno Awards during the Super Bowl had me thinking that maybe they have a performance lined up. Maybe a March single release, a performance at the Juno's, and a late April or early May album release followed by an outdoor-venue Canadian tour schedule.

While this is all hypothetical nonsense, it fits well with the rest of this topic content, and I really don't see how the band can go any further past a March/April single release seeing as how the album has been completed for some time. Dropping an album is like investing, really. The further you put it off, the more you suffer from the lack of compounding interest and sales, so it could be that they're waiting for an appropriate event to stimulate the maximum principal.

Last night I dreamed that The Hip (well just Gord D. and Robbie) played three songs in my living room, none of which I remember but I don't think there were any new ones... They were playing the songs for some kind of video. Anyway, aside from being pursued by drugs dealers and talking a crazy girl out of basically kidnapping me, I discovered that the new Tragically Hip album will be called In Solitaire. This is what was told to me in the dream and I found the revelation significant enough to actually wrench myself out of sleep, convince myself to open my eyes and get up, fumble for my tape recorder, and very sleepily record myself saying, "In Solitaire... by the Tragically Hip." before pressing stop, dropping the recorder onto my chair, and falling back into deep slumber.
